Aftermath: The Hormuz Farm Crisis - The American Prospect Fertilizer prices are crushing rural farmers. Also, attacks on Gulf state aluminum smelters leave America exposed.

I was in Nebraska last week, where the Strait of Hormuz crisis is hitting home on family farms that can't afford to fertilize the crops.
That, plus a looming aluminum shortage, in the latest edition of Aftermath, our pop-up newsletter on the consequences of the war.

I had the opportunity to confront Pete Hegseth's bigoted spiritual mentor, Pastor Doug Wilson, and call him out on his history of hate, his misreading of the Bible, his hijacking of Jesus, and his cosplay Crusading.

It was worth it.

Of course they are concentration camps. And @anatosaurus.bsky.social is right that once you accept the euphemism you are halfway to normalizing the thing.

Trump never works, there are no ‘policy meetings’ he snorts Adderall in the morning & watches TV, does a phoner w/supplicant press and then hands out a trophy in late afternoon. It’s adult day care for a drug addict. Weekends he golfs in Palm Beach.

“The power lie is a different kind of deception. People already know it’s not true, so there is no way to contradict it, to persuade people otherwise. The appeal is that, as a believer, you can be part of it, sharing the power by accepting the falsehood is true.” — @caroloff.bsky.social #UrbanTruth

Cancel the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Trump will be guest of honor at the “nerd prom,” with journalists serving as suck-ups

Journalists planning to honor Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner have a choice:
A. Party with the dictator, wear fancy clothes and network to boost their careers.
B. Stand up for democracy by staying home.
They’re going to choose A. It looks terrible now. It will look worse to history.

Israeli strike hits Gaza church, killing 3 and wounding priest who was close to Pope Francis An Israeli shell slammed into the compound of the only Catholic church in the Gaza Strip, killing three people and wounding 10 others, including the parish priest, according to church officials.

Just hours after war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu sanctimoniously scolded us about how Israel and the IDF respect other faiths.

As Trump’s lies get more egregious (and repetitive) I have at least noticed fewer mouth-breathing bootlickers willing to defend him in my comments.

And the administration is leaking about how he’s hurting negotiations and how they’re keeping him on the sidelines.

I’ll call that progress.

He only cared about ONE thing...how it looked on TV. Enough has been said regarding the impossible healing job...not enough said about the depravity it takes to kill your followers to make good television.

"This approach risks creating a climate of fear within the FBI—one in which employees worry about their words, their assignments, & their careers, rather than focusing on threats to the nation. That kind of environment erodes trust, damages morale, & ultimately weakens the institution."

"The relentless push for new ways to make garbage go up in smoke is a natural outgrowth of industry’s long-standing effort to frame plastic pollution as nothing more than a waste management problem."

There's more behind door # 3...
"Burning plastic can also put a cocktail of dangerous chemicals into the air, including dioxins, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated furans, & hydrogen cyanide."

And not only that, the eggs resist burning.🤪
"The eggs also contained short-chain chlorinated paraffins & polybrominated diphenyl ethers, which are both used as flame retardants in plastic & are linked to hormonal disruption, developmental & neurological damage, & cancer."

Text snapshot: "Along with several partner organizations, Ecoton has also tested eggs from chickens foraging in Tropodo’s plastic ash-strewn soil. Ash from plastic burning can contain dioxins and heavy metals, the Annals of Global Health reported in 2024. In Tropodo’s eggs, Ecoton and its collaborators found dangerous chemicals including PCBs—banned globally in the 2000s because they are believed to cause cancer and problems with the immune, nervous, reproductive, and endocrine systems—and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as PFAS or forever chemicals, which are linked to conditions including reduced fertility, high cholesterol, and cancer."

Would you like your genes scrambled?
"An adult eating an egg like the one found in Tropodo would exceed Europe’s acceptable maximum intake of chlorinated dioxins—chemicals linked to cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, & hormonal changes—by 70 times."

Plastic, I remember when it was a miracle.
"Even when done in incinerators equipped with air scrubbers & filters, such burning is linked to higher rates of premature birth, congenital abnormalities including heart & neural tube defects, & may increase cancer risk for those living nearby."

One of the great things about self-publishing is that you can just decide to do something...like make a six volume collection of short stories with rainbow covers that spans your 15 year journey writing cyberpunk to solarpunk (and a little weirdness and subversive lit along the way).

HIRE KATHRYN. In an age of journalism in a death spiral, she's the real deal as investigative journalist, an excellent writer, a true thinker, and a real human being. She knows Christian nationalism as well as anyone.

Off topic (or not). Pardon. You've liked so many of my reposts & posts. Thanks.
You're one of few, generally.
Anyway I asked the internet about a word in your header.👍 Those are some very fine virtues to hold as models.

I missed the horizontal shrooms, the wall loaf, & the wellies on Daisy. I also note that NONE of their shoes are sensible for hiking! Perhaps on their way home from school on their usual route, past the rhino / bovine breeding program & anti-gravity research farm, with thatch huts for staff.
