Sad to hear of John Flanagan's passing. I'm deeply fond of the Ranger's Apprentice series, which really scratched that itch for sneaky, hooded archers. The books have humor and heart and are just a lot of fun to read, and I so adore the characters.

Thanks for the memories, Mr. Flanagan ❤️

"We're gonna be okay, aren't we?" she asked, not sure if she was talking to Jassin or to the stars themselves.

Yet it seemed that both answered, for even as Jassin responded, one star shot across the sky, leaving a trail of glittering dust in its wake.

"We are. We're gonna be okay."

Three covers of my novel MASSIF. The UK and Australian ones have a photo-realistic approach, the US one is illustrative. All feature a seated figure looking up at a mountain range ascending into space. US cover illustration by Matt Griffon. UK cover by blacksheep.

An adult science fiction novel tinged with horror, about the crew of a small warship in a relatively near future where humans hitch rides to the stars on sentient star-faring mountain ranges called Massifs.

#Febchantment day 27

I'm excited to create stories in a world where everyone has magic of some kind. It's not limited to certain people, you don't have to go to school to learn it, and there are no tools required to use it. Everyone just has it innately. It's a fun system to play around with.

I'll define strength as a user's proficiency and familiarity with their magic.

Strongest: Solan, a player with unnatural magic who can create illusions.

Weakest: Probably most of Keria's Tribe friends, since they don't use their magic (or at least claim not to).

#Febchantment day 25

At the time of Sacred Bell, all anyone knows for sure is that their grandparents were born into a world without magic, and now magic is everywhere. No one knows where it came from or why, though many theories are beginning to emerge.

#Febchantment day 24

In the time during which my novel is set, there are no schools or formal ways of learning magic, so Keria learns how to use her magic the same way everyone else does: through practice.

Whether she wants to or not.

I have to stop doing these when I'm in a rush. An embarrassing number of my responses have had typos 😅

#Febchantment day 23

Everyone in Sacred Bell can use magic. How much it affects them depends on what exactly they can do, but for most the impact is pretty small. For Keria, however, her magic completely changes her life, and a lot of bad ways, but some good as well.

#Febchantment day 22

In Sacred Bell, the story would not happen if it weren't for magic, as it's Keria's discovery of her magic and her attempts to learn and understand it that shape the plot and her character. But the resolution of the story relies on her own growth rather than on her magic.

a close up of a man 's face with his mouth open . Alt: Ben Solo screaming MORE!! as a representation of the author's psychopathic need to destroy the souls of fictional children

In case you're wondering this was prompted by me looking at a group of children in SB and deciding that I haven't *quite* destroyed them utterly and completely. More suffering was needed.

Writing's all fun and games until you find yourself deliberately finding the worst ways to hurt your characters by using their own flaws (which you have given them) against them.

This is surprisingly hard for me to give an interesting answer to because most magic in Fife *is* mundane, so everyday life is affected by magic in some way. Many people can replace some small tasks with a magical equivalent, but traditional skills haven't been lost.

I *may* have added the word "subtle" to this snippet for this prompt BUT that's because the prompt made me realize that I absolutely should use "subtle" somewhere in this wip 😅

Because everyone has magic, every aspect of culture has been touched in some way. One specific affect is that, except in specific circumstances, bodies are typically burned instead of buried in order to prevent them being raised from the dead against their will.

Feeling like a broken record now lol, but it ✨depends✨ The benefits of many magics are obvious; for instance water-based magic can be invaluable in the desert. But even those who can't benefit from their own magic directly can find a way to make money from it.

#Febchantment day 17

This depends on location and what era of magic we're in. Very few magics well ever be outright outlawed, and never permanently, but throughout history some may be frowned upon, restricted, or banned in certain parts of Fife depending on the culture and perspective at the time.

#Febchantment day 16

Arguably (since they aren't human and don't have magic as defined in the rest of Fife), the gods of the Sea Kingdom have the most powerful use of magic. They can influence any number of mereen (mermaids) at any given time, and some are powerful enough to influence other gods.

Natural magic works within the bounds of nature and draws power from nature itself.

Unnatural magic works outside the bounds of nature and draws power from the users themselves.

But some magics defy such definitions and can't be neatly classified one way or the other.

Magic most often goes wrong when someone doesn't know what they can do in the first place. Especially in Fife's early history, most people discover their magic by accident, and depending on what your magic is, the consequences can range from mildly bad to catastrophic.
