Perhaps I never got the appeal of "liminal spaces" all that much since I grew up in a place that many people would call "liminal."

It it makes the HOLE a liminal space, but I think the apartment itself is a better example of "unheimlich," which is when something familiar becomes uncanny or uncomfortable due to being distorted.
