A Few Thoughts For Those Who Can't Sleep -- April 21 Edition
A Few Thoughts For Those Who Can't Sleep -- April 21 Edition YouTube video by Dr. Joanne Freeman

Hi folks:

Tonight on "A Few Thoughts for Those Who Can't Sleep," I talked about the redistricting vote in Virginia -- what it means -- gerrymandering in the past -- and what to expect going forward.

The GOP entered this redistricting under the rather childish delusion they were going to gerrymander, and nobody would gerrymander them. In TX, MO, and a half dozen other states, they put their rather naive theory into operation. They sowed the wind, and now they are going to reap the whirlwind

It's "the power of positive thinking" again — every defeat has to be coped into being a great victory. The important thing is not winning per se, but convincing yourself and others that you're winning, to maintain the illusion of success

A reminder while Republicans bitch about Dems finishing the redistricting fight they started: they have full control of gov’t— they can pass a law banning gerrymandering any time they want. They won’t. Republicans aren’t mad gerrymandering exists; they’re mad that they’re not the only ones using it.

Conservatives have been trained for decades to think of Constitutions not as agreed-upon rules for fair governance, but as a series of cheat codes and loopholes that let them hold power even when the voters want to throw them out. They won't accept anything less than permanent domination of us.

Ok last post

Good reminder that Black, Asian, and Hispanic voters big part of Virginia Dem coalition

Another election showing a shift from 2024

Also reason why Yes won

Also mailers invoking Jim Crow for No didn’t work and probably backfired

NYT Pitchbot: Whether it's Democrat voters saying "fuck the politicians" or Republican politicians saying "fuck the voters", both sides are engaging in fuckery.

I would submit that a gerrymander by politicians saying fuck the voters and one by voters saying fuck the politicians are two wholly different animals

Abigail Spanberger won by 13 points just last November. We HATE Trump.

Democrats did not step back. We fought back. When they go low, we hit back hard.

We won Prop 50 in California, reclaimed a seat in Utah, pushed back extremists in Ohio and halted toxic GOP efforts in Indiana, New Hampshire, Nebraska and Kansas.

Tonight, thanks to the relentless work of Virginia Democrats, led by Governor Abigail Spanberger, Speaker Don Scott, State Majority Leader Scott Surovell and President Pro Tempore L. Louise Lucas, “YES” won and Donald Trump lost. Virginians spoke with a crystal-clear voice, voting to stop the MAGA power grab and protect the integrity of free and fair elections.

This war is not over. Next week, Ron DeSantis is hauling the Florida legislature back into a special session to redraw maps because Republicans know they are on the verge of an epic defeat in November. DeSantis is clearly more interested in illegal gerrymandering than lowering the high cost of living or fixing our broken healthcare system. Right now, nearly 5 million Floridians are facing higher premiums because Republicans failed to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits.

If Florida Republicans proceed with this illegal scheme, they will only create more prime pick-up opportunities for Democrats, just as they did with Trump’s dummymander in Texas. We will aggressively target for defeat Mario Díaz-Balart, Maria Elvira Salazar, Carlos Giménez, Kat Cammack, Anna Paulina Luna, Laurel Lee, Cory Mills and Brian Mast. We are prepared to take them all on, and we are prepared to win.

Maximum warfare, everywhere, all the time.”

DCCC Chair Statement on Passage of Virginia Redistricting Referendum
Today, DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene released the following statement after Virginians voted to pass the redistricting referendum in response to Donald Trump and House Republicans’ unprecedented mid-decade gerrymandering scheme:

“Tonight’s result is a victory for every American who wants fair representation in Congress, a massive rebuke of Donald Trump and Republicans’ efforts to rig the midterm elections, and a rejection of their cruel, cost-spiking, and corrupt agenda that is hurting hardworking families. The DCCC has always said that the public, when given the opportunity, will hold Republicans accountable for their attack against fair representation in Congress, and tonight Virginia voters did exactly that.

“House Republicans know they can’t win on the issues, which is why they tried to stack the deck through their corrupt gerrymandering scheme in states like Texas, Missouri, North Carolina, and now Florida. Virginia voters turned out to fight back against their cynical ploy and to send a message that Republicans won’t be able to cheat their way into holding onto power.

“As voters continue to sour on the reckless Republican agenda in Washington, it has never been clearer that Democrats are on offense in every corner of the country. Virginia will play a central role in our path back to the House majority, and we are well-positioned to flip seats throughout the Commonwealth in November.”

With the VA yes vote, Democrats will emerge with +1 House seat in the redistricting wars Trump kicked off last summer. They are very, very likely to win back the House in November

Don’t be surprised if Trump suggests the Virginia redistricting vote was rigged, because that’s what he does when he loses close votes. Of course, Trump pushed Texas to redistrict without even consulting the voters.

With the result in Virginia, here's what we know about how mid-decade redistricting has shifted the landscape.

Across the 7 states with new maps:
—11 districts have shifted toward Democrats;
—9 districts have shifted toward the GOP.
