Each day during Public Health Week, @defendpublichealth.bsky.social will be highlighting two of the 10 planks in our People’s Health Platform.

This afternoon we are focusing on PUTTING SCIENCE BACK INTO PUBLIC HEALTH

Tired of RFK Jr.’s delusional, vibes-based public health approach?

SO ARE WE!

A pink sheet strung on several hangers sways in the wind on a laundry line, suspended from the rafters in front of a bank of green bushes

A pink sheet strung on several hangers sways in the wind on a laundry line, suspended from the rafters in front of a bank of green bushes

To anyone who may call me impatient:

This is factually inaccurate.

I have a 1 cu. ft. washer, a king size bed, and a laundry line. It takes me all day to launder and air dry my organic cotton linens (when it’s warm enough to so).

Wouldn’t trade this #SustainableLiving for anything.

A chart comparing the arrest rates of immigrant parents with U.S.-born children from January 2022 to January 2025 of the Biden administration (data shown in blue) and the first seven months of Trump’s second term (data shown in red). Under Trump, the rate of arrests doubled. Text on the bottom of the chart reads: Note: Arrest figures for both administrations represent an undercount due to data limitations. See our methodology for more details. Source: ProPublica analysis of ICE data obtained by the University of Washington Center for Human Rights.

Under Trump, immigration officers have detained parents of U.S. citizens at about twice the pace of the previous administration. And compared with Biden, Trump has detained many more people with only minor criminal histories or none at all.

What a massive blind taste test of vegan milk, cheese, and ice cream found — explained in one chart What people really think about plant-based dairy.

I have two different yet equally disappointing #vegan cheddar cheeses in my fridge, but the provolone in the same brand is really tasty. And I’m so bummed by #PlantBased mozzarella, I make my own cashew buffalo mozz to avoid the stretch altogether. www.vox.com/future-perfe...

These animals can cause big trouble. Why are states unleashing them by the millions? Introduced species can wreak havoc on native ecosystems. Many states are flooding their waterways with them.

The nonnative fish released by states that depend on fishing licences for all outdoor conservation efforts are considered 'naturalized.' Translation: Whether or not we see certain species as invasive "often comes down to what we value." www.vox.com/climate/4831... #AnimalMatters #Interdependence

Communities who are already bearing much of the burden from industrial pollution are also at greatest risk from climate disasters. This order just makes environmental injustice worse.

Trump Doesn’t Value American Lives. His New Pollution Policy Is Proof | Opinion The Trump administration is poised to throw out the very idea that climate pollution is a threat, too.

In a new @newsweek.com, leaders from the @sierraclub.org, @nrdc.org, Environmental Defense Fund, and @earthjustice.org warn that the Trump administration’s latest Environmental Protection Agency pollution policy puts corporate profits ahead of public health.

At a ‘Tea Party’ With Scientists, This Ape Showed Some Imagination

Of course these beautiful creatures have imaginations! We already know the emotions of wonder and awe can be traced back to our primate ancestors. Only because we’re unwilling to believe that they have higher order thinking has it taken us this long to recognize it.

Column | Good news: We saved the bees. Bad news: We saved the wrong ones. Honeybees have never been in danger of extinction. But scientists are finding that they can accelerate the demise of native bee populations.

Having written about bees as commodity animals, I found this piece of advice fascinating:

Restoring one acre of habitat for each hive maintained could be enough to sustain the 40,000 insects living in a typical hive without starving the native bees.

I'm pretty sure that killing people with pollution is *also* bad business. Did anyone else spend 30-40% of their AGI on healthcare in 2025? (Or was that just me?) And I have good corporate insurance! My insurer paid six figures in care. That ain't cheap, so explain this "cost to businesses" to me.
