COVID is sweeping our campus and there's at least three variants I've heard are affecting students. I caught the one that causes stomach issues and gives you flu like symptoms without fever. Wild y'all! Get vaccinated.

I have had a great first few days at #ESA2025 here in Baltimore, MD. So far I've had the incredible opportunity to catch up with a local friend, see lots of amazing science talks, present my Fusarium endophyte work from 2022, and co-moderated a translating science to policy session.
Job alert! Please share.

Fascism breeds bad science. I stand strong against the Trump administration's actions against science, education, health, and the American people.
Feeling very trans and queer today in the flowers. 🌹💕☺️

I just watched Bill Nye—on my television—read from policy goals that my new friends and I came up with. No one’s going to be able to tell me anything FOR WEEKS!!!

I had an amazing week speaking to Northeast senators and congressmen about the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR) in the Farm Bill. FFAR is important for agricultural research collaborations between the public and private sector in the U S. Thank you to everyone who talked to us.

Apropos the mud slides that are about to hit LA in the next 36 hours, I wrote a tiny reading recommendation for Nature -- 16 years ago -- that still stands up today. "Los Angeles Against the Mountains" remains essential (and terrifying) reading:

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.
“Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.
I would also do it before the rain this weekend.

Close up view showing fraction of metals. Fun stuff.
Just had a sample of the Eaton Fire ash that is in my driveway run on the department XRF. Is there titanium (new house paint)? Yup. Lead (old house paint)? You betcha. Heavy metals? Check. Treat that ash like it's toxic folks (because it is)
My mother and our family lost our home in Altadena, CA, on January 8th due to the devastating Eaton Fire.
If you’re able to donate and or share our fundraiser we would deeply grateful.
