Beautiful images ≠ usable data. 🎨💻
Ask an image analysis expert BEFORE you start experiments. 20 min prep beats weeks of lost experiments, sweat, tears and frustration.

Hello to animation tuesday! 😉 This 👇 animation is the outcome of the work I did for our publication of the human prohibitin complex. Moddeled a mitochondrion and animated one of my beloved flythroughs, et voilà 🥰

What a nice sight to wake up to 😊🌀
The amazing work of @cellarchlab.com, @florentwaltz.bsky.social and their team made it on the cover of @science.org and I had the honor to create the visuals!
I hope you like this ATP (animated title page 😉 you see what I did there?).
So I connected all the dots and told him that I am absolutely very pretty much at least 50% sure that the structures he found were the elusive prohibitin rings. Turns out they were, and...here we are 🤩 (3/3)
I knew about the distribution and location of prohibitins from, at that time, some unpublished work, and I'd heard from others that these proteins were supposed (!) to assemble in a ring shape in the mitochondrial membrane. (2/3)
Storytime:
One of the things I like about my job is that I can poke my nose in everywhere, so I can get a broad overview of everything that is going on. One day my colleague called me in and showed me some strange ring-like structures in his EM data of mitochondrial cristae. (1/3)
I'm happy that our publication about the structure of the human prohibitin complex is finally out! 👉 rdcu.be/eeNzl
This animation did not make it into the paper...but it is the model shown in Fig. 5! 🥰
And yes, I like Flythroughs!

That was the inspiration btw ;)
I wanted to have some fun with one of our data sets from reconstructed FIB-SEM measurements.
So far, this is my only character animation, a bit janky, but I love this little guy 🥰
And yes: YOU are awesome!
Have a nice weekend!

😍
Fun fact: At that time I had no idea about boolean operations and so I animated the cutting through the cristae by setting keyframes to the clipping distance of the camera...well...It did the trick 😅
Unfortunately, this clip did not make it into the paper. If you are interested in the science behind these data, you can find the paper here: "Mic60 exhibits a coordinated clustered distribution along and across yeast and mammalian mitochondria" doi.org/10.1073/pnas...
With some more time spend learning #Blender and another steep learning curve for #DaVinciResolve, I created this little animation, showing the architecture of mitochondrial cristae in a yeast cell.

After that, I was hooked and followed the now classic doughnut tutorial from BlenderGuru Andrew Price (is he on here 🦋?) to learn even more #Blender.

A trip down memory lane: Years ago, we got FIB-SEM data from yeast mitochondria and I had a bit of free time. Some hours of learning #Blender later I rendered out my very first animation 😄

Version 0.1.5 of my Blender CSV Importer is out! 🚀
Now with a Python interface and the latest data-crunching power of @pola.rs. Special thanks to @bradyajohnston.bsky.social for contributing to this release! Full changelog in comment. Link:

I did my Diploma thesis working with Chlamys and I really miss Erlenmayer flasks with a bright green suspension dancing on an illuminated table shaker 😍 was always fun to watch 😊
Thanks 🤗
In love with this shading 😍...and the protein is cool too 😋
I was laughing so hard, when i saw and HEARD this animation...obviously we have the same taste in background music 😁😊
Reconstruction of mitochondrial inner and outer membrane from FIB-SEM data. Had to shorten the vid bc of 🦋-limits.
