π New paper alert! Led by Dr Hannah Barker, we explore how NHS shift scheduling can better support nurses. Collaborative & compromising strategies, flexible scheduling, and proactive communication are key to improving wellbeing & efficiency.
By prioritising collaboration and compromise, NHS organisations can create more sustainable schedules that support staff and improve care quality. These findings have real implications for workforce planning.
Effective nurse shift scheduling is not just about filling gaps - it is about balancing individual wellbeing with organisational needs. Our study highlights the importance of conflict management strategies in making this work.

Automated workload assessments could help nurse managers respond faster to staffing pressures, improving care quality and workforce sustainability.
Our study used a small set of routinely collected variables to predict nursing workload in one English hospital. The results show potential for real-time monitoring and reduced admin burden.

#HSRUK25 great plenary on innovative research to improve workforce efficiency and sustainability. We might already know what doesn't work for the workforce but we don't know what are the different needs and we need to find the solutions. Join the workforce research network to step up and co-create!
What a first great day at #HSRUK25 learned a lot about the amazing research that is happening across the UK. So good to see the impact it is having and how the relevant people are involved in everyone's work. Now looking forward to some networking and catching up at the conference dinner ;)
6. Convene researchers and make your voices heard
7. Changes are driven by the people policy is focusing on
8. Do not patronise or lecture your MPs - think from the other side of the fence
9. Consider the form of communication they prefer - visual?email?in advance?
10. Be honest: findings can change
#HSRUK25 great conference opening plenary focusing on impact of health services research on policy. My favourite points so far:
1. Don't go to the new flashy tool, focus on research that matters
2. Speak truth to power
3. Focus on underserved populations
4. It's not linear
5. Be quick at responding

Good things come in pairs! Our new paper shows that eliminating hospital understaffing by hiring more permanent nurses is cost-effective, saving Β£4,728 per year of healthy life gained per patient. Investing in RNs benefits patients & the economy.
