Will never forget when my phone was confiscated at secondary school because I got a phone call telling me a family member was in the hospital, and this meant I had caring responsibilities. Told them and school still insisted on taking it off me even though I needed to, you know, do that caring.

do you have any insight into how developers (first or third party) approached, or were expected to approach, designing achievements? this is kind of a maddeningly specific interest of mine, i am forever thinking developers underestimate the number and magnitude of effects they have on players

what did you all think would be the result of achievements? was the current focus on rarity predicted? was the airbender farming? was Sony's creation of The Platinum?

they are a naked attempt to short circuit the usual paths of game appreciation to drive platform engagement statistics and whether you are effortlessly puppeteered or nobly and rationally resist them you intuitively understand that the things are poison

the reason achievements sit in this corner of hatred and enthralment is that they are, fundamentally, a violation of The Boundary. they are the platform intruding into the game and the game bleeding into the platform. even if you don't understand the nature of the artifice, your mind rejects them

inexplicable hostility aside, multiplayer games do in fact (typically) require some kind of continuous investment if the developer wants long retail life and retention (which they typically do). admittedly the hobbyist dragon boys may be atypical. they still promised a content tail.

right. the game will continue to be playable. what i mean is, will they continue to develop it, add content, market it, do big splashy updates, etc. even if it's not "live service", a multiplayer game still needs tending and won't have the long tail a solo game would
