The greatest photo ever taken - in my opinion. Shot last night by Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman: The Earth in full moonlight. You can see the Atlantic Ocean, parts of Africa, Europe and South America, the Auroras, Venus and the zodiacal light. WOW!!! Goosebumps!

Not.

A historic moment: Category 5 Hurricane Melissa making landfall in Jamaica yesterday as seen from the GOES-19 satellite. It's a 6-hour-loop starting at 11.30 UTC, Oct. 28.

The dangerous combination that made Melissa a monster hurricane Hurricane Melissa’s power was undeniable, intensifying faster than most storms on record.

“We’re going to be seeing a lot more Melissas in the future and we’re definitely not ready for it,” @drjeffmasters.bsky.social said.

Incredible shot of the eye of Cat 5 Hurricane Melissa just moments before landfall in Jamaica yesterday taken by ESA's Sentinel 2 satellite. The amount of detail is breathtaking!

This I shot at 2044 UTC in the outskirts of Berlin slightly south of the zenith. Thanks for the confirmation!

No, Burning Wood Fuels Is Not Climate-Friendly As Europe and the United States look to cut their carbon emissions, the biomass industry wants us to pretend that logging forests in the American South could help.

Burning wood emits more CO2 per unit of energy than coal due to wood’s lower energy density. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2006 noted that wood and wood wastes have a greenhouse emission factor ~20% higher than coal.

Yesterday a, wildfires in Spain and Portugal went completely ballistic with large pyrocumulus clouds visible on the geostationary satellite images. Also the burn scars of recent fire activity are easily visible (dark spots).

Perseid meteor observations were not only impaired by the brightly shining moon last night in Germany but also by smoke layers between 2000 and 7000 m altitude as well as some Saharan dust in the lower layers below 2000 m.

2025 is now the third most intense year on record after 2023 and 1989.

In most media this is barely reported on, but what has been going on in Canada recently is simply mind blowing. Think about France, Germany and Poland under a blanket of smoke. That’s the actual scale of this.

This graph shows the average July global SST for each year, 1982-2025. July, 2025 ranks 3rd hottest behind (you guessed it) 2023 and 2024.

The oceans absorb about 89% of the extra heat due to rising greenhouse gasses, or about 870,000 Hiroshima bombs worth of heat per day.

To be more specific, building very large oceanic heat pumps (at the GW scale), marine solar power plants, highly reflective materials and energy storage systems like all kinds of batteries and e.g. deep aquifer heat storages, engineering a global energy balancing system looks possible. #thinkbigger

Talking about the solutions to the global energy imbalance I believe there is now likely enough methods and technology available that we could fix the energy imbalance within a few decades if we decide we want to do that. Still a lot of damage is gonna happen but we could probably avoid +3K or more.
