how did you automatically get the worn paint material on the hard angles of the new geometry?? Are you using shader nodes? I've tried doing that with shader nodes before and I couldn't figure a way out.

yea! I'm achieving this effect on a layer by pixelating it and overlaying it on itself passed through a blur with strong alpha treshholding which basically creates a border, I then just crank the contrast and lower brightness a little
