A scientific report released last month announced the start of a “a grim new chapter for life on Earth.” Why aren’t our government officials and corporate leaders more alarmed?https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/C2S7qr

old T May drops some real facts here. we should've voted for her Brexit deal, too. you don't know what you've got until it's gone I guess www.youtube.com/watch?v=Czun...
Said as if smartphone videos are having more of a watchdog effect than traditional photojournalism did in the beforetimes of common trust in the press — the decline of which is causally related to social media
This would genuinely be win-win — if it can be enforced. China knows it's feeding the fentanyl crisis and it needs to be reigned in www.wsj.com/world/china/...
early 1920s were good, too, imo
The fear of seeing this guy's face in a news article
All very amusing, but especially this:
"The most popular was an “Australian-style points-based immigration system,” with a net 46 percent support. The least popular was “Britain’s current immigration policy,” with -39 percent support."

France’s deficit is the logical outcome of Macronism: a massive state combined with tax cuts for rich people.
"Because corporate tax (cut by Macron) is lower than income tax, they pay an effective tax rate of just 25 per cent, about half that of the average French person."
I think this is the non-grammatical third or fourth guardian headline I've seen this week 😒
First long-form interview with Mamdani I've seen. Remnick naturally asks deep, penetrating questions of great import, and keeps pressing Mamdani. Surprisingly — to me — he holds up, really quite well. Well worth a listen: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbq7...
‘Thoravej 29’s ‘off-the-shelf’ raw structure was still replete with idiosyncrasies and challenges to overcome to enable its full reuse; the architects’ deft navigation forms the essential dexterity of the new architecture’ writes @reubenjbrown.com on NGO Bikubenfonden’s new HQ by Pihlmann Architects
Early on, Blair’s main objective had hern to win power and his objective having won power was to win power again at the next election.
The more things change, the more they stay the same?
1,553 days until the next UK general election. Perhaps Labour MPs should spend at least some of them (the next 1000, say?) arguing and thinking about things other than electoral strategy?
This is so incredibly kind and thoughtful of you, Lord Woolley. Thank you so very much.
(Please see my previous post for information on how to register for the election of the next chancellor of Cambridge University.)

This is a big moment for Reform - and a serious defeat for Labour published at 06:05 06:05 Professor Sir John Curtice Polling expert Reform's success in the Runcorn by-election is a big moment for the party. In winning 38.7% of the vote, the party has matched the highest share of the vote for any Eurosceptic party in a by-election ever (Heywood and Middleton 2014), other than in the two occasions in 2014 when a defecting Tory MP won in UKIP colours. Meanwhile, there are only 17 previous by-elections in which a majority as big as the 35% majority Labour enjoyed has been overturned. It will be difficult for Labour to argue that this was anything other than a serious defeat for the party.
Fascinated by the use of the word 'Eurosceptic' here.

Missed opportunity for Reform to not go with "Make England Great Again" hats and take the acronym MEGA ... MGBA hardly rolls of the tongue
If I didn’t want the UK to succeed, I would find all the ways the government is hobbling its growth strategy so funny. Pro the Oxford/Cambridge arc, provided we don’t make it easier for researchers to come here, and not so pro as not to pass a *one-line bill* for metro-mayors.
Watching a recorded church service from a local Progressive Christian church. Abundance by Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson is mentioned.
I am laughing. I can’t escape this.
The main reason UK electricity prices are so high isn’t net zero but the fact that gas sets the price 98% of the time.
Some belting quotes in here
Tim Cook once again proving himself as the greatest political operator of our times. I reckon he could set up a supply chain in Hades

Huge and mental scoop from @willdunn.bsky.social.
‘Australian media advertises the fact that a UK state pension worth “thousands of dollars” can be bought cheaply by Australians who live in Australia: “It almost sounds like a scam – too good to be true,” it observes.’
The king has spoken
Far as I'm aware. Some of the lab-leak theory research is very compelling, though — VERY IMPORTANTLY — not conclusive www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
