AI Is a Mass-Delusion Event Three years in, one of AI’s enduring impacts is to make people feel like they’re losing it.

Hello. I wrote a nice long essay about AI and this very strange moment where we're constantly told we're living in the dawn of a strange new future but the only thing that's actually clear is that everyone feels pretty unmoored and uncertain. I hope you'll read it

"AI will replace all the jobs!" Is Just Tech Execs Doing Marketing - SparkToro Over the weekend, I went digging for evidence that AI can, will, or has replaced a large percent of jobs. It doesn't exist. Worse than that, actually,

Angst als Marketing-Strategie. Läuft.

"AI-first" is the new Return To Office - Anil Dash A blog about making culture. Since 1999.

A bunch of tech CEOs are talking about being “AI-first”, the latest in a series of CEO fads like “return to office”, “founder mode” and “pivot to full fascism”. This one’s weird, though, because it only makes sense if… none of their workers are great at their jobs. anildash.com/2025/04/19/a...

Bastarde.

Reading this, it struck me that all this techbro discourse, from colonising Mars to AI, is all a massive failure of reading. It is an artefact of the philistinism of people who read/watch SF and fail to understand that most basic thing about it: it's not about the future or space. It's metaphor.

Holiday on Saturday(!), shops will be closed

Just a notice to anybody who is not aware of it or a reminder to those who knew it but have forgotten:

Saturday 8. March is a public holiday in Berlin (International Women's Day). Supermarkets and shops will be closed. Restaurants and Cafés however will most likely be open. Just like on a regular Sunday.

So if you were planing on going groceries shopping, you should do this today or tomorrow (or drive/take the S-Bahn out to Brandenburg, where it is not a holiday).

Gut so.

A two part coming. On the top panel, a gray caricature of a person is labelled "Open AI" and is smiling while reaching for a yellow balloon labelled "Intellectual property theft". In the bottom panel, the same scene is presented but zoomed out slightly; this time, the person is looking backwards nervously at a pink monster also labelled "intellectual property theft"

I want to share my experience today with Google support, trying to get Gemini (their AI/plagiarism machine) turned off in my Google workspace account. That account is where I personally do all my work communication—I am an editor, and most of my work contracts explicitly ban any use of Generative AI

Washington Post subscribers quit the paper en masse following owner Jeff Bezos’ decision to withhold its endorsement of outgoing Vice President Kamala Harris. But the Post’s audience problems extend beyond angry former subscribers.

Over the last four years, web traffic has cratered. According to internal data shared with Semafor in recent weeks, the Post’s daily traffic last year reached a nadir of just a quarter of what it was at its peak in January 2021. That month, the Post had around 22.5 million daily active users. But by the middle of 2024, its daily users hovered around 2.5-3 million daily users.

Last year, Washington City Paper noted that the Post had stopped publicly disclosing its traffic numbers in press releases, after a 60% decline in monthly traffic. On Friday, The Wall Street Journal reported that the Post’s revenue fell from $190 million in 2023 to $174 million last year.

Behind the scenes, the company was also quietly dismantling a system to prevent the spread of misinformation. When the company announced on Jan. 7 that it would end its fact-checking partnerships, the company also instructed teams responsible for ranking content in the company’s apps to stop penalizing misinformation, according to sources and an internal document obtained by Platformer.

The result is that the sort of viral hoaxes that ran roughshod over the platform during the 2016 US presidential election — “Pope Francis endorses Trump,” Pizzagate, and all the rest — are now just as eligible for free amplification on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads as true stories.
