Made this infographic to teach my students that chivalry and cavalry are doublets (and cognates). 🤯🤯🤯

It's just hilariously disingenuous. Imagine looking at, say, ALL OF HUMAN HISTORY and concluding that the biggest threat to liberty isn't abuse of power, but powerful people refraining from sufficiently wielding their authority out of fear that they might one day be held accountable.

Students are doing a unit on the Roman invasion of Britain. I took a poll yesterday: if you were a Briton, would you have resisted Roman conquest or cooperated? The results are in:
17: accept
1: secret resistance
1: it depends

Sharon taught me the phrase ā€œvague pronoun referentā€ in my first year of grad school and then proceeded to write VPR all over my thesis, dissertation, and early article drafts until I finally broke the habit. A huge debt indeed! ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø

Such a good point that these tasks often require serious research labor. Esp when I was the workhorse teaching faculty in a small dept, I was often expected to develop, prep, and teach courses that were far from my area of expertise. (Greek oratory when my expertise is Latin poetry e.g.)
