I’m once again reminded that even medium speed train can be such a pleasant way to travel and it is frustrating how little Canada has invested in rail infrastructure

People can’t afford groceries. They can’t afford bills. People are living out of their cars. We have people working full-time here and then picking up part-time jobs elsewhere just to make ends meet.”

Today, more than 2,200 long-term care workers from 24 care homes across the province take to the picket line. Nova Scotia’s long-term care workers are the lowest paid in Atlantic Canada, and do not make a living wage.

“the question of what to automate and delegate, what to preserve, what to do slowly and by hand even when faster options exist, that question only makes sense if you have first asked what you actually want your hours and days to feel like, and taken the answer seriously.”

Maybe worth noting that this is the 4th PSE strike in Nova Scotia this academic year, and that since Tim Houston became Premier in 2021, there has been a strike at every university in the province except StFX and the Atlantic School of Theology.

Tim Houston's austerity budget envisions huge deficits, staff cuts, and a billion dollars in additional cuts by 2030 - Halifax Examiner The budget tabled today also slashes climate change-related science.

Nova Scotia’s budget came out and it’s one of the worst austerity budgets I’ve ever seen. I am going to use this thread as a place to point out everything that’s being cut.

There are a few people who are very heavily invested in this tech. They have a lot of resources and a very strong interest in getting you to believe that this stuff delivers what it promises. But it doesn’t.

OpenAI Reportedly Planning to Make ChatGPT "Prioritize" Advertisers in Conversation OpenAI employees working on ChatGPT report plans to unleash sponsored advertisements above organic results.

The immense pressures to recoup investment make the trajectory for generative AI look the same as for so many other recent tech innovations: users will pay (more), and the user experience will get *significantly* worse.
