Tweet by Martina Navratilova. "Predator. That is how he should register. A sexual predator…" quote-tweeting a tweet by "Biology Rules OK" about Dr. Beth Upton, a trans woman

This tweet is highly defamatory and Martina Navratilova should be fired from BBC Sport for it.

It demonstrates an horrendous level of hatred for a trans woman (who was cleared of all wrongdoing in a recent tribunal) because she is a trans woman.

We're in the middle of a climate crisis Nick. WAY past the middle. 🙄

When you push a sweeping law, it’s the fringe cases that you *must* consider. The ‘normies’ matter much less, because they’re generally OK anyway.

Faculty Defect From Texas Publics, Citing Censorship Fed up with the state’s censoring of Plato, Joan of Arc and Romeo and Juliet, humanities professors are leaving Texas public institutions in pursuit of academic freedom.

'Texas A&M philosophy professor Martin Peterson is leaving the university after administrators told him in January that he couldn’t teach Plato’s Symposium in his philosophy class; they said the ancient Greek philosopher’s work violated the system’s restrictions on gender and sexuality content.' 1/3

Really sorry to hear that - good luck! What a brutal, wasteful system we’re living within.

Handy Guide:

✅ Free Speech: When GCs who had no relation to my University complained to try and get me kicked off my course

❌ Not Free Speech: Exercising one's right to peaceful protest against those advocating your exclusion from society – on the campus you have to live and work in

Another outcome from Trump’s America slapping Ukraine in the face is that he has provided a huge impetus for European nations - especially Ukraine 🇺🇦- to develop other sources of weaponry than America.

Ukraine now planning to develop and manufacture its own version of Patriot missiles

I'm so excited to see this special issue out and about with DOIs (with a little Poly-O essay from me)! Thank you to @fairbanc.bsky.social and Catherine Jenkinson for being excellent editors

Been thinking about this, a lot, from a professional standpoint as well as a personal one. Some thoughts as to what Dugdale has said here, and why it is harmful to not only trans and non-binary rights, but rights in general. 1/

Thinking of you, Martin - as ever, when you update us. It can be hard to know what to say in response, but I expect very many of us read your posts and value, always, your openness and courage.

Just for the record: UW history has more majors and minors right now than at least since 2015, maybe 2010, and we are starting to hear people leaving, say, computer science, and explaining that the job market is uncertain everywhere so they may as well do what they enjoy

Why are Harvard’s slavery researchers quitting or being fired? The school’s $100m project to examine its slave ownership in Antigua is mired with controversy as academics allege obstruction

Guaranteed not to be cited in complaints about ‘cancel culture’ on US campuses, but an important, informative read about Harvard’s links with slavery & their inept efforts to address them.

I guess you could argue that the idiot was exposing his own idiocy, but I really wanted the interviewer to give him a proper shake. What does it say about his take on Christianity that he supported Trump, knowing who he was and the damage he could do, solely to secure an abortion ban? #r4today

On April 15, at the direction of #SOUTHCOM commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan, Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by Designated Terrorist Organizations. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along known narco-trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. Three male narco-terrorists were killed during this action. No U.S. military forces were harmed.

Despite the administration’s rhetoric and bogus legal theories, the supposed armed conflict with “narco-terrorists” appears to be entirely make believe.

Murder is the general term for premeditated killing outside of armed conflict.

A screenshot of a Hollywood Reporter politics news article. The headline reads, "Dave Chappelle Knocks Republican Party for “Weaponized” Transgender Jokes: “That’s Not What I Was Doing”" The subheadline states, "After being called out for transphobic jokes, the superstar comedian told NPR that Lauren Boebert and other Republicans are politicizing his humor." Below the text is a photo of Chappelle in a black tuxedo speaking at a podium, with a caption noting he is accepting the President's Award at the 2025 NAACP Image Awards.

No, that's exactly what Chappelle was doing and it's why trans people criticized him for doing it.

Thanks! Having this story, with its undertones of homophobia and xenophobia, presented as the main news story of the day feels deeply uncomfortable to me. Maybe it just belongs in the Murdoch press rather than the BBC.

BBC News is going very hard on its investigation into advisers who help people ‘fake’ asylum claims, focusing especially on people who falsely claim to be gay. But it doesn’t say what percentage of claims are made on the basis of sexuality. As of 2023 — the last available figures — it was 3%.

I love all well-deserved the jokes about Vance, but this callous cruelty is no laughing matter. What he is “most proud of” is that he stopped helping a nation in dire need.
