Very happy to say I will be a PhD student at the University of Derby in the new year, researching Social Infrastructure in Staveley, Chesterfield. Working alongside some great colleagues, including @alessiodangelo.bsky.social and @nisanalici.bsky.social. Extremely grateful and excited to start!

I have joined the Greens this week, the first political party I have ever joined. I have been moved to action by Zack's new direction and his active challenging of the status quo.
We need change, get involved.

Petition: Take our trains into public ownership | We Own It
The government is taking railway operators into public ownership, but the trains themselves will remain in private hands. The government must take our trains into public ownership.
π
Want to end the Great British Train Robbery?
βοΈIt only takes 1 minute to sign our petition.
π€The rolling stock companies have made Β£3.6 billion in dividends over the past decade.
Now's the perfect time to demand they take our trains into public ownership.

Change you can board: Delivering better, greener buses | IPPR
The governmentβs bus services bill focusses on a five-point plan:
extending bus franchising powers beyond metro mayors to all placesaccelerating the franch
Great new report and analysis here from @ipprnorth.bsky.social and @msingerhobbs.bsky.social.
This covers the economic, social and environmental costs of the decline in buses seen over the last decade and what can be learned from Greater Manchester to kickstart a revival in local bus networks

Manchester's buses becoming under local control again is a testament to what can be achieved when local people are given the power to do what they actually want. All power to Burnham and the team at TfGM for years of hard work.
Definitely a positive start to 2025!

That is incredibly positive! Hope to see it followed through. Local control of decisions is extremely important.

Requires them to give power! Unfortunately it'll take a
Chancellor with the political will and mandate, which Reeves lacks.

Only with fiscal levers at the local level will it improve meaningfully!

Lack of long-term planning was a key theme in my research and a central reason Metro Vancouver has the solid base it does, whereas Greater Manchester is still building that foundation.

Excellent insight by Stephen here. Lack of long-term planning, guidance and specificity, especially in transport, can only lead to more and more fragmentation in the system.

A good step to be sure, but the best approach would be to bite the fiscal bullet and just buy (or nationalise) the ROSCOs. They shouldn't exist. The operator, be that private or not, should own its rolling stock.

It's tough! When I get in that way I try to remember who we are advocating for and that the despair and apathy is what they are aiming for.

Introduction Post!
I'm Dan, a transport researcher and advocate. I recently completed my MA Politics dissertation comparing the transport systems in Greater Manchester and Metro Vancouver and I am currently writing my first journal article.
Would love to connect with people in this new place!

The industry, advocates and users alike should watch closely, how with this new blemish on the political leadership of DfT plays out in the longer term, especially with Hendy beginning to come out of the woodwork and duck questions about his actions as NR head towards @garethdennis.bsky.social.

Her replacement, @heidialexander.bsky.social, has big shoes to fill, not just with the 'nationalisation' of rail but with the arguably more important task of constructing and implementing the Integrated National Transport Strategy that Haigh announced the day before (!) she resigned.

Louise Haigh's resignation is disappointing to say the least, many positive moves in a (politically) short period of time and a rare shining light from this government.

it's the red and white book I wrote, held up in front of a Vancouver SkyTrain
Very pleased to say that tonight's #Railnatter guest has received her copy of #HowTheRailwaysWillFixTheFuture and is brandishing it at a SkyTrain station in Vancouver... Which is useful, as that's the episode subject matter!
