if you see this, post a concert photo you took

24. Reflektor- Arcade Fire
what’s not to love about a really class song that gets you moving? and the fact that Bowie comes in with a cameo vocal during the last 3 minutes when the chord sequence has elevated to some other place makes it all the more special

there was a rumour that’s why Rock And Roll Circus was left unreleased for so long - because the Stones compared unfavourably to The Who. but in fairness, anyone would on that performance!
it’s actually a still from a bit of super 8 cine that grandad took in his back garden. i’m so lucky to have silent film of me as a baby!
a big birthday shout-out to my utterly amazing sister, who i seem to love more with each passing day xxxx #HappyBirthday

23. A Quick One, While He’s Away - The Who
the lp version is insipid, but this live version is one of the greatest things i have ever seen. from 4:25 onwards the band are on fire in a way i find hard to believe has been bettered by anyone, ever. please watch!

22. Happiness - Elliott Smith
the song is one of the man’s finest achievements, the coda starting 2:30 is achingly sincere, and the production trick around 3:50 where it sounds like a tape player has paused the music is clever. and then a backwards guitar solo!

21. Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel
where to pinpoint the beginning of the end when this timeless song does nothing but build and build? i’ll go for the start of the hastily written third verse (3:20) when the orchestra sweeps into view. sublime

20. Bike - Pink Floyd
admittedly for years i didn’t really like the part of the song where we enter the “room of musical tunes” at 1:52, but now i see it as relevant to the song as the wonderful melody and lyrics. it’s Syd inviting us into his universe!

i realise i have some #ExitMusic catching up to do. it’s on its way!
no better way to spend such a beautiful day than walking past the residency of the late, great Stanley Kubrick. this place is literally the home of The Shining!

19. Lose This Skin - The Clash
one of the worst songs on their worst lp (i don’t count Cut The Crap)? not a bit of it! this is one of my favourite songs on their best lp, and when the song breaks down, how the snare drum kicks the band back in at 3:45 is magic

fair point! but a decade ago i remember there were some good restaurants down there - now it’s gimmicky restaurants, no doubt selling diamond (hot) dogs! see what i did there?!?! 😂
it’s still an incredible song. i can’t let the fact it now belongs to the world somehow curtail my appreciation, that way lies an element of musical snobbery…
was actually looking for Morrisey & Marr then! 🤔
it really is. i actually liken it to a scab that will never heal. every now and then you think it’s dry enough to pick off, but you just make it bleed again…

18. Fly On A Windshield - Genesis
literally from the moment the fly hits the windshield (!) around 1:18, just one of those wondrous pieces of music that i can play over and over again. curious to me how the music manages to sound both dense and full of space…

an amazing day mooching around London yesterday with old friends, and not a cloud in the sky - just glorious! the only disappointment to me was Heddon Street seems to be turning into a David Bowie theme park these days, with establishments called Ziggys and Starman. a bit naff really….
