Put it another way, GDP plus imports equals consumption, investment and gov spending. That's a simple algebraic function. Imports simply are not considered when you are calculating GDP.

@kairyssdal.bsky.social can y'all have a memo go out to everyone on marketplace to stop saying that imports are subtracted from GDP. It's simply not correct. Imports are subtracted from consumption, investment and gov spending because each one of those things has some amount of imports in them.

Tariff money doesn't come in to the country. It was already here. It's being siphoned from the pockets of everyday Americans into the Treasury. To slightly narrow the huge deficits Trump's tax handouts to plutocrats are creating.

Moreover, there were deportable persons in the US prior to the civil war - enslaved people who were illegally smuggled after 1807. Congress knew of them and considered the treatment of their offspring (citizens instead of deportable). It'd be absurd to think they were excluded from "whole persons"
