I have a BA in Chemistry & Physics from Miami that I got alongside my BSEd in Chemistry with Physics endorsement. Those science BAs give students some career flexibility and require little to no extra effort by departments and cost nothing. Ohio is just punching itself in the face to "own the libs"

You'd be surprised how often this works
A screenshot of a white-on-black terminal depicting a 19x19 go board in ascii graphics, with empty grid intersections as periods, and black and white as Os and #s
It’s absolutely incredible that one of the largest Japanese-run Go servers, which has been running since 1992, is still accessed entirely via Telnet. And while most players use GUI clients that use Telnet under the hood, you can still connect manually and get ASCII graphics streamed to you
I'm not joking when I say mRNA technology is more important than "AI" and it's a tragedy we're throwing billions into one while our government is aggressively defunding the other.
Congratulations! Thank you for defending science so that I can keep teaching it to future generations
emacs going nuts again
a photo of butter ring cookies in yellow plastic packaging with three flower-shaped ring cookies outside the package
I've always loved seeing those buildings in person when I've visited Chicago but they remind me too much of those Lil Dutch Maid Butter Ring cookies that I'm worried they'll dissolve when it rains
Also in that case McDonald's corporate knew that their coffee had been measured as being served dangerously hot beyond any human's ability to drink it at stores across the country and purposefully chose not to replace their unsafe machines because they felt it would be too expensive and not worth it
I've been a high school teacher for almost 30 years and nothing gets kids to stop using annoying slang faster than adults using it earnestly in front of them
I loved that movie growing up, the book is hauntingly beautiful too!
Seven countries now generate 100% of their electricity from renewable sources, proving the transition is not theoretical but already operational. The barrier is no longer technology, but political will, investment priorities, and the courage to move faster.
Just because someone is yelling things at scientists, or angry at the results science yields, doesn’t mean there is a scientific debate. Life evolves and shares a common ancestor. Climate change is caused by humans. Masks work. Apples don’t fall up. Vaccines are safe and effective. Eppur si muove.
don’t let em touch my Japanese FLUTE
The @moderation.blacksky.app moderation tool has a "Synthetic Media" labeler which accurately hid this image for me, FYI.
Roughly twice as many Americans died from COVID-19 in just the first four years of the pandemic as the number of Americans who died in combat in our many wars and armed conflicts (not counting the Civil War), yet we don’t have an official “remembrance day” or memorial for those we have lost
I met Kim Deal once when The Amps opened for Foo Fighters and she was super nice and friendly, she told me she was mad that the audience was throwing mini hot dogs on stage during that dog.'s set until she realized it was because the band's name was "that dog." and laughed so hard, it was awesome
This comic by Matthew Bors is titled "Mister Gotcha" and was posted on The Nib on September 13th, 2016. The comic features a man trying to own others by pointing out their hypocrisy when they argue for improving society. He first mocks a person tweeting about how Apple doesn't pay livable wages for Chinese workers because the person is tweeting from an iPhone. He then mocks an early-20th century car owner for arguing cars should have seatbelts. He then appears in the last panel mocking a medieval peasant for wanting to "improve society somewhat".
Same vibes
Wow, you know it's bad when the test line activates before the mixture has even made it to the end of the window! Hope you feel better soon
Loving the ratio on this workshop announcement about “scientific integrity” with two of the most notorious science frauds in recent history, Jay Bhattacharya and Emily Oster, both of whom insisted that kids were safe from COVID and grandma might have to die for the sake of the economy
And still: the old web was good in so many ways for so long. The Tron-pilled amongst us held the line. When we build a new, good, post-American internet, we're going to need a multitude of Tron-pilled technologists, old and young, who build, maintain - and, above all, *defend* it.

Uhh... aurora borealis?
Oh wow I remember Ghostscript! Amazing that you would get assignments in that format and be expected to just deal with it, although I remember having to do all of my computational physics assignments with a specific version of Fortran that only ran in MS-DOS on PCs that had a math co-processor 😬
If it was math it sounds like LaTeX
Three dragons meme. Two dragons look fierce. The third dragon on the right looks derpy.
