‘I knew in my head we were dying’: the last voyage of the Scandies Rose The long read: When a fishing boat left port in Alaska in December 2019 with an experienced crew, an icy storm was brewing. What happened to them shows why deep sea fishing is one of the most dangerou...

She used to be a fantastic magazine writer. Her historical novel was OK. But now I can’t abide her.

Guess I should have known when it asked me if I identified as a cisgender woman. No, love. Just a woman, that’s plenty enough.

This is horrific. I doubt they’d let me in either. Bye bye America for a while.

No cheating. Post the last photo of your pet.

Dora thoroughly ignoring the new catnip toys that she has been delighting in, because I was trying to show my brother how much she loved them.

The quick thinking that averted oil catastrophe in the North Sea Although one sailor died, the tanker collision might have been far worse without the speed and bravery of the rescue — and some lessons from history

This is a great piece on why we are not seeing oiled birds off Grimsby. Nice to see follow-up after all the disaster writing.

Glad the crews are safe. But not glad at what sea life is now suffering.

FWIW the vast majority of shipping accidents are caused by human error. My money is on an unattended bridge. Nothing much else makes sense with all the tech on offer. But eyes are as useful as tech.

Hello, I’m dining on my own. I’d like you to ask me several times if I’m on my own please, then seat me on the table nearest the toilets, then ostentatiously remove the second set of cutlery while asking me again if I’m on my own. Otherwise it just wouldn’t be right.

Why do we assume smell is our weakest sense? My cat can smell depression. Another family cat could smell my stepfather’s dementia. They both became more affectionate and tactile: the dementia-smelling cat would gently paw my stepfather, when he ...

Belatedly, here is a review I wrote of a very good book about smell. www.spectator.co.uk/article/why-...

So you encourage paperless statements #cooperativebank but you can’t actually search them all online, but instead you encourage the customer to print them out. Huh?

Nice one #Co-operativeBank: an online banking system in which you can’t search online past 13 months. Totally antiquated. Bye bye Co-op after 30 years.
