Music-Based Magnetic Resonance Fingerprinting to Improve Patient Comfort During MRI Exams The unpleasant acoustic noise is an important drawback of almost every magnetic resonance imaging scan. Instead of reducing the acoustic noise to improve patient comfort, a method is proposed to mitig...

If you ever done an MRI you know about all the weird sounds it makes. Well, weird no more!

There's a sequence (MRF-Music) that makes the sounds you hear during an MRI to play at the beat of any song you want. This will make the exam much more tolerable and confortable

I actually don't hate this visualization. There are two takeaways: (1) how far away is the red line from the dashed x=y and (2) how good is the fit of the points to the red line anyway?

Agreed that the dashed line is low contrast and so if you don't look carefully you'll miss point 1...

Graph of maternal mortality rate against year for the UK. Rate bounces until and down around 500 deaths per 100,000 births until about 1940, when it falls sharply. It’s been very low (~1–3 per 100,000) ever since.

This graph is astonishing. The people that bang on about “natural birth” and “women have been doing this forever without help” need to be forced to stare at this until their eyes water.

Inside U.S. health agencies, workers confront chaos and questions as operations come unglued The Trump administration’s remaking of HHS — in a matter of weeks — is sparking basic questions about how parts of the agency and those it oversees can continue to function.

Can the #HHS agencies continue to function, given the deep cuts to administrative staff in the recent layoffs? Employees of these agencies are expressing deep fears that so much of the scaffolding is gone that the edifices could crumble. www.statnews.com/2025/04/11/h...

High-frequency location data show that race affects citations and fines for speeding Prior research on racial profiling has found that in encounters with law enforcement, minorities are punished more severely than white civilians. Less is known about the causes of these encounters and...

Using data on more than 220,000 individuals on Lyft, researchers report in Science that drivers of color are significantly more likely to receive speeding tickets than white drivers, and to face steeper fines, even when traveling at identical speeds. scim.ag/3QYTjOO

Thrilled to announce that I've joined @kimia-tx.bsky.social as chief technology officer. Kimia's one-of-a-kind chemistry platform is an incredible data engine for building foundation models of chemistry and applying them to dramatically accelerate exploration of small molecule space.

It’s been a tough few weeks. My 10yo daughter was diagnosed with a very rare, aggressive cancer called interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS). I’m reaching out to identify clinicians/patients who have encountered pediatric IDCS or other (non-LCH) dendritic or histiocytic sarcomas cases.

Sometimes the experimental control is messed up – but in a really interesting way! – and it's a great 'night science' trick to make a discovery by recognizing it when it happens.

Small AI-designed proteins neutralized one of cobras' nastiest venom toxins. The findings raise the question: Could AI bring antivenoms into the 21st century? That and more of the best from @science.org and science in this edition of #ScienceAdviser: www.science.org/content/arti... 🧪

mRNA export factors store nascent transcripts within nuclear speckles as an adaptive response to transient global inhibition of transcription Transcription inhibitors also disrupt nuclear export. Here, Williams et al. reveal that mRNA export factors sense transcription inhibition and adapt by storing mature export-competent mRNA in nuclear speckles. This enables rapid release when transcription resumes and ensures retention of cellular identity and viability during a transient global transcription insult.

Why can a human tolerate a drug that globally inhibits transcription? Why do transcription inhibitors not cure cancer? Our first paper of 2025 may help explain (some) of this!

So incredibly proud of @tobiaswilliams.bsky.social & Ewa Michalak who led the work!
