Being able to recall things about the Kanto region Pokédex has been useful in my adult life more often than knowing how to write in cursive has been. Admittedly, that’s a low bar, but it’s true.

It’s funny to think I could have just randomly tuned in to the Food Network at some point in the early to mid 2000’s and had a non-zero chance of seeing Shigisato Itoi on TV.

Don’t get me wrong, I the like variety! I think it’s actually really cool that it wasn’t just the 4 most recognizable Pokémon at the time.

Also, that was a pretty random assortment to choose, even at the time. As far as I recall those were the only 4 they made plushies of for the KFC tie in. A bit surprising they didn’t go with Pikachu and the 3 gen 1 starters. Even with how new it was in the US, it had been out in Japan for a bit.

In all fairness, the Colonel’s slightly weird pronunciation of Pokémon (which somehow over-emphasizes all three syllables) is a LOT closer to how it’s correctly pronounced than the “pokey-mon” pronunciation we were hearing from of nearly all other non-gaming related media at the time.
