I reviewed @galbeckerman.bsky.social's rousing manual How to Be a Dissident.

It's a timely provocative book that grapples with the existential questions posed by rising authoritarianism, and it challenges us to wrestle with what kind of dissident we'd like to be.

More than anything else this reveals just how impulsive the major questions doctrine revamp is. It all ultimately stemmed from Roberts's personal antipathy to a regulation, and everything since has been a dishonest attempt to dress it up so that he doesn't look like he's just shooting from the hip.

Over just five days, the justices had decided the issue. Even as they debated the Obama plan’s possible burden on the power industry, in the entire chain of correspondence obtained by The Times, not a single justice, conservative or liberal, mentioned the dangers of a warming planet as one of the possible harms the court should consider.

Another data point in “originalism is a fraud.” So much for the law is the law we can’t think about the impact. They rail against “results oriented judging” in public but when their corporate clients make requests they know exactly what to do. www.nytimes.com/2026/04/18/u...

Opposition to this nihilism is growing and all kinds of unlikely alliances are being forged – against ICE, nuclear weapons, generative AI and the very existence of billionaires. The supremacist survivalists are powerful in government and tech, but they are far from invincible.

Rather than avoiding the existential conflagrations they foresee, these disaster entrepreneurs welcome the fires and floods, convinced they will be among the saved on the other side.

But while exploring the dark recesses of apocalyptic thought, we’ve also found plenty of cracks and light...

Despite their differences, these groups stand united in their belief that a cleansing cataclysm is coming, whether through the manifestation of biblical prophecy, the rampages of artificial intelligence, or the purported existential threat of immigration and cultural replacement.

Since that essay, events have only gotten more apocalyptic (esp this past week), reinforcing our core thesis. END TIMES FASCISM digs into the dangerous alliances between messianic religious nationalists, tech-bro supremacists and populist survivalists who increasingly define the contemporary right.

More than 10,000 veterans lost their homes to foreclosure since May of last year, when the Trump admin shut down a key safety net in the VA home loan program, according to the latest industry data.

That is the highest pace of foreclosures for VA loans in a decade.

The President may, of course, engage in his own expressive conduct, including criticizing the views, reporting, or programming of NPR, PBS, or any other news outlet with whom he disagrees. The government may also fund its own speech and may fund government programs that promote specific perspectives on issues of public importance, and it may decide which views or perspectives to convey—and which not to convey—in any such government speech or program. And it may impose limits on federal grants to ensure that they are deployed to further the legitimate purposes of the program and may pick and choose among applicants based on legitimate criteria. But the First Amendment draws a line, which the government may not cross, at efforts to use government power—including the power of the purse—“to punish or suppress disfavored expression” by others.
