Causal inference courses: here's how you estimate causal effects and these are the assumptions you rely on and by the way the assumptions are always violated kthxbye

Becoming successful is not luck. It’s math.
If your probability of success is 1/100 and you try 100 times, you have a 100% chance of success.

Community note:
Trying 100 times with a 1/100 success probability per independent trial gives a 63% chance of at least one success (1 - 0.99^100), not 100%. https://math.stackexchange.com/questions/1885662/something-with-a-probability-of-1-occurring-100-times

Government security vetting | Institute for Government How does the UK government's national security vetting system work?

With the Peter Mandelson appointment as UK ambassador to the US back in the headlines, it's worth understanding how the UK government's national security vetting system actually works.

Our explainer sets out the process:

“Another way to look at this is that billionaires have joined a war on professional administrative class of public servants precisely because of their proximity to formal mechanisms of accountability.”

That part! Everything from documentation to compliance mechanisms to whistleblowing is a threat.

Ah the ol' surround sound and massive screen doing their work.

(Ep III memorable from the audience laughing aloud at the acting when Anakin shouts "NNNOOOooooooooo" at hearing of Padmes demise.)

Ouch.

I have arrived at check in to be told "we have no record of you booking a ticket" (pre apps and digital wallets). Lol. That was painfully expensive but again glad I was early...

Don't be shy to take on a little two-week side project. These five months will be the most precious three years of your academic journey.

Yeah the issue in the article is not just education research. Any time s'one develops a programme and marks their own homework = risk of bias

And there is certainly a distribution re quant research quality - arguably in many subjects though.

This image is a political illustration from the German newspaper Die Zeit depicting a confrontation between a Pope and a US President.

The artwork is titled "Pope Leo XIV" and portrays a tension-filled scene between the two figures.

A peer reviewed study shows a promising link between flu and shingles vaccines and a reduced risk of dementia. A heroin addict who cut off a raccoon’s penis for “further study” says these vaccines cause autism. For busy Americans, it can be hard to know who to trust.

(And what really winds me up the most about this is that the justice system is so cheap compared to its effects on society. The entirety of the court and prison estate costs less than 15B/year. You can read about its costs here but this was insane vandalism.

The trials that quietly changed our lives Testing claims matters more than ever in an age of misinformation, overconfident assertions and unsubstantiated opinions

My article in the Financial Times about my book. It includes a wonderful randomised trial of beer glasses (which you might unknowingly have been part of if you bought a pint in some British pubs c.1998)

You always get a lot of angry replies here if you complain about the Greens blocking solar farms or power grid upgrades. Maybe they should stop instigating pile-ons and start instigating pylons.
