I'M STUCK IN A LOOP

I do like the very Braun-esque minimalist design, though the labelling on the controls could be much more intuitive without the manual

a circuit board with a d-shell connector with only 3 sockets. there's a bit of plastic around it marked HP, so presumably it is from some test equipment.

CRT Monitor (Dell M780) with a Spyder2 Colorimeter stuck to the center of the glass, an keyboard (IBM Model M) and mouse (Microsoft wheel mouse optical) are illuminated by the white glow from the CRT. The current colour patch is a turquoise and is all that can be made out on the CRT in the photo

If my Speed Graphic wasn't an earlier spring back model it would be so tempting.

KeePassXC asks us to be skeptical of them if we are skeptical of LLMs. This is a convincing argument. A password manager doesn't need 300 regular contributors armed with 14 LLMs; it just needs to do its job, be stable, and be ported to Qt 6 already.

We are a small group of engineers with extensive open source maintenance and information security experience, and we forked KeePassχ from KeePassXC 2.7.10, the last release before the advent of the LLM policy linked above. We like using a robust, secure, and trustworthy password manager, so that's what we'll focus on. Anything on top of that is a bonus.

in case you missed it, we decided to fork KeePassXC.

"Computer Conversations: how to talk to your new co-worker."
It is a vintage-style handbook cover featuring a late 60s stylized computer on the left and an office worker rabbit (she/her) on the right having a conversation.

The lack of internet (or at least being too slow to render modern dynamic pages) combined with apps that aren't trying to get in your way with notifications or changing the UI order every month really does make for a nice experiance.

With printed media, you can just store it in a warehouse. When some company says "we never said that," you can go to the archives, fetch a newspaper, and that ends the argument. When the companies on their websites change stories, there is no archive outside the Internet Archive.

An extremely funny thing about retro rereleases that use unlicensed emulators is that you are basically committing the exact same crime (using software outside of the terms of its license) that has you so scared of downloading roms in the first place but now someone has monetized it.

Pinout is just wherever the pads on the die end up closest to. We can't waste a single square millimetre of die space!

At least for the backend part that's basically what ASP.NET is. Programming web apps in C# or any .net language.

Though the front end still is always going to be HTML and CSS

Is this now the first console that's gotten more expensive from its launch price over time, rather than less?

Those prices are kinda reminding me of the insane launch prices of the PS3

It's annoying that we're back at late stage Twitter in terms of having to self censor to try and avoid bots.

Google Has a Secret Reference Desk. Here's How to Use It. 40 Google features to find exactly what you need, the alternative search engines that do things Google won't, and the reference desk framework underneath all of it.

This is a great list of techniques for getting real information out of a Google search and avoiding AI slop and paid results.

Thankfully the "premium" room we had there seemed normal. It did have a frosted glass pane door to the bathroom but at least was a normal shower tub, though with a rainfall type head.

Was definitely eyeing the wooden plate one on the first pass through, only for it to be bought right as I pass again.

Congrats on all the sales. Always love your work

Didn't realize Kai was there! Missed my chance to just sit around and talk old computers or such.

Will have to see who I caught on film and didn't immediately recognize the name XD

I definitely had too much fun at #Vancoufur and woke up exhausted this morning. Wishing I didn't forget to book off a rest day from work after con.
