I really like @hankgreen.bsky.social's recent take that what AI can be is either utility or slop, and that, for better or worse, software has always been primarily utility for the end user. Here's to hoping we don't let our tech, design and products become slop either π€

This video is so good!! You will learn so much and also you should hype it (if you know what that means)

The results from a game of the card solitaire Klondike. It's four aces in a row, except that the Ace of Spades (πΆ the ace of spades πΆ) has the Nine of Spades on top of it - meaning it's as close to a successful game of Klondike you can come to without actually winning it.
I've started replacing scrolling with solitaire card games during breaks, and this is the closest I've come to beating Klondike so far π₯³/π«
π£ Survey time - tell us about your experience with AI for software engineering, me and @gergely.pragmaticengineer.com want to know!
The survey takes about 11 mins to fill out π results will be published in about a month, full access for those who help out!

Society is so cool, humans are so cool, the fact that there's so many tasks and jobs and roles and places in society where people can work and make an impact and difference in the world is awesome. I wanna remember that more often π
I was talking with one of the people who runs the coworking space, and she asked what I work with and I said I work "in tech", and she asked what I meant because that could be ANYTHING - civil engineering, biotech, energy technologies, etc. There's so much world outside of the IT software bubble!!!
www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8U7...
I've recently moved up north in my country to a smaller city, and the coworking space I go to has people who work outside of tech, and it's honestly *so nice* to just hear about things that aren't tech and software!

A dark gray beetle, about 20-25mm long, sitting on the armrest of a wooden chair. It has the meanest-looking eyes you can imagine - black as tar. It's staring into your soul, and judges the very core of your being. It's giving "I will haunt your dreams, shit on everything you hold dear, and if I had the required body mass, I would beat you until an inch of your life".
A dark gray beetle, about 20-25mm long, sitting on a glass table. It has the meanest-looking eyes you can imagine - black as tar. It's staring into your soul, and judges the very core of your being. It's giving "you have disgraced the air around you, your existence is offensive to me, and I hereby curse you and everything you hold dear for ten generations".
A very mean-looking beetle joined me for dinner yesterday - its rage was palpable

And @hankgreen.bsky.social followed up with *the single best metaphor* about the internet: it's like food. So obviously, managing the role that the internet has in life is just as (or more) complex than maintaining a balanced relationship with food, and it all makes sense. youtu.be/9euKCrTyMEc?...
Hank and John created two absolute bangers recently which has helped me understand my relationship with content and the internet, starting with @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social 's video about how we're addicted to things *for a reason*, because they _feel good_: youtu.be/0veampRSw7w?...
youtu.be/if-IgLJQbPI?... talks about rage bait and controversy as basically the most effective marketing strategy that exists, and it's true and I hate it so much

writing and creating and building things and expressing myself, but it hard to do that when the platforms for expressing yourself are just *massive* hurdles to overcome. It makes me sad to think that so much creativity in one place can harm so much creativity elsewhere... :'(
the creativity of the users of those platforms, but also themselves, because obviously there are loads of us who are on both sides in this! I love enabling creativity in folks working in the tech industry, because software engineering can be such a creative and expressive craft, but I also like..
to unlock and enable creativity and sharing creative work with others. But then, as Cam says, the platforms, and *especially* recommendation algorithms, are seemingly harming creativity more than anything. So the creativity the tech industry uses to develop and monetise the platforms are hurting..
Being a creative in the tech industry is such a curious place to be - because on the one hand, I know these platforms exist because of the creative process that is software engineering, and developed by creative PMs, devs, designers, people, and at one point, these platforms were supposed to exist..
