Interesting, though I wonder if this also applies to tasks in which kids rate external things rather than internal states. For example, the task in question requires children to rate how often various objects make an interesting effect happen.

An ideal measure would thus have answer choices that vary in some kind of numerical magnitude, if that makes sense.

Hi, Alexis. Thanks for this and for your question! I'll take a look. The task in question requires children to report how often a given object made a blicket machine go.

Have any of you used rating scales in your work? If so, I’d greatly appreciate any citations you’d be willing to share in the comments. If you haven’t used them yourself but know of studies that have, I’d love those references too.

TIA!

Developmental science colleagues:

One of my students and I are about to launch a study that requires 3- and 4-year-olds to use a rating scale. The problem is that I've never used age-appropriate ratings scales with children, and I'm drawing a blank on studies that have.

Enjoyed speaking with Barbara for this piece and explaining how online dynamics can make vaccine hesitancy and rare vaccine harms seem much more common and increase parental concern

Why you stink at fact-checking Cognitive psychologists know the way our minds work means we not only don’t notice errors and misinformation we know are wrong, we also then remember them as true.

It's International Fact-Checking Day!

Here's an old article from me about why we generally stink at fact-checking and the important role that professional fact-checkers serve in the information ecosystem.

Where does that leave Hegseth's "lethality" talking point if all of the Black service men and women just...quick?!

This is extremely fascinating and adds an interesting wrinkle to the whole story. Now I need to go back and re-read the M&J paper

Love this but wonder how these findings might be reconciled with the classic face findings with unknown faces (think Johnson & Morton) or even the in-utero face findings. I quite like Lisa Scott and Michael Arcaro's account on this -- preference for high-contrast objects and lots of face experience.
