The studies you're referencing have godawful methodology. You need to be more careful about accepting insanely sexist claims like that at face value.

The Wirecutter/Costco truly are capitalism's answer to Calvin's dad having a meltdown over peanut butter options.

Capitalism, still undefeated.

This is absolutely true. Some of the valid worries are commercial (the programming profession is changing rapidly). Some of the worries are cultural (LLMs have destroyed homework as both a teaching tool and an evaluative tool).

I cannot tell you how many policy conversations I’ve been privy to where the central dilemma is “we need to incentivize private actors to do something, but for unclear reasons they cannot be permitted to earn any sort of profit by doing it.“

At the time Elgin took them, not only was the building being used as a Turkish ammunition dump, locals were carting off chunks of marble to repurpose for their own construction projects.

Canadian history is not great on this point, either. There is a collective trans-Atlantic shame for anti-semitism that cannot be completely escaped by any nationality.

This, combined with multiple mutuals reporting a sudden uptick in productivity when Bluesky became briefly nonfunctional the other day, combined with my own observations of my cratering attention span, are motivating me to take a break.

If I'm gone awhile, fear not, that's good news for my QOL.

Every time I think I've blocked enough people to make this site functional, I run into another pocket of leftist bullshit. In this case, your classic Woke 1.0 "can't be racist to white people" nonsense, combined with "generalizations that unfairly villainize tens of millions are fine, actually".

I made the mistake of going to the gym instead of being online to fight a mob of people all making the exact same comment like they're original.

Come to think of it, there's a lesson in this.

Redefining racism to make it impossible for you to commit it is one of those profoundly shitty moves that only convinces people who yearn to be bigots.

How many millions of white Americans voted for your preferred candidate in recent history? As quickly as you can, please.

3 days ago 0 0 2 0

It suggests I haven't been lured into an ideology that forgives my own racism while denouncing everybody else's.

You're a hypocrite and a fool.

43% of white Americans voted for a black president. Casually dismissing their support and lumping them in with the white people who didn't is shitheel behavior.

Of course there is. Allowing yourself to be talked into believing otherwise suggests you lack decency.

White women voted 51% for Trump in 2024. Statistically speaking, how many white women are you miscategorizing as being part of the problem when you throw them all in the same bucket?

Of course there is. If you've developed a belief system that permits you specifically and only you to be a bigot toward a race you dislike, odds are good you're deluding yourself.

Imagine lecturing women on the content of women's rights.

I have. Growing up looks like prioritizing positive outcomes over counterproductive virtue-signalling.

White Americans are 50% women. White Americans were key players in civil rights advancements. This sort of sloppy anti-white racism is unhelpful.

"We have a plethora over the past five years" should really be your focus, IMHO.

I think it would be more helpful to focus on the "real problem" part of Beshear's message instead of nit-picking the specific example!

3 days ago 0 0 1 0

There are plenty of other examples. Unhoused vs. homeless, etc. There are people in threads spinning off that Beshear post defending the use of "inseminated persons" as an alternative to "mothers".

I don't think denial is the appropriate reaction to this problem!

This is, in other words, an own goal that the Dems can stop scoring on themelves at any time.

Here's the City of Santa Monica using it in a PR capacity. It's pretty clear that it's a regularly-used term within California government bureaucracy, a system managed entirely by Dems, and then regularly leaks out into the real world where it's used to fan outrage at Dems' expense.

Was the public intended to read it?

This is on San Diego County's website, found in seconds. Dems, for laudable reasons, have an academia-to-politics cultural pipeline. Denial isn't helpful.

Normalization of time fraud starts early, for sure.

I feel like you're almost deliberately missing the point, which is that a race/species/identifiable subtype of whatever that Tolkien described as follows is, in any self-respecting TTRPG, getting a bonus to stealth checks:

A straightforward Google search brings up plenty of instances of this term being used.

Yes, you should stop talking space aliens if you want to reach people.

Stop pearl-clutching and accept that the man has a point.

Whatever Tolkien's original intentions, by the time D&D was invented, nobody believed that orcs, elves, humans and dwarves were the equivalent of different human ethnicities.
