Happening this Thursday! I will be giving my first invited talk as a professor at a colloquium hosted by UC San Diego's Sociology Department. I will be sharing some of my findings from my research on Latinx, Indigenous, and American Indian identification in the U.S. Census.

The Trump tax plan only works by cutting public services.
This incredible visualization combines the potential tax cuts (which mostly go to the rich) and loss of services (mostly borne by the poor).
It is a giant wealth transfer from the poorest to the richest. budgetlab.yale.edu/news/250319/...

Summer research internships are an incredible way to kickstart a scientific career. By cutting these opportunities, we are undermining the future of American science.

Hot pink poster that reads Science is for Everyone
Excited to be protesting today with my UMN colleagues because #ScienceIsForEveryone 🧪🧬 🧠
I’ll also be giving a brief speech at the MN state capitol about why diverse perspectives are an integral & necessary component for us to do good science ✨

BREAKING: Job losses spiked a whopping 245% in February.
This is higher than any month since July 2020 (the middle of pandemic) and the highest in any February since the Great Recession of 2009.
Rising racial gaps in wealth
Another loss for #science & the next generation of researchers. The 28-year running NIDA summer internship program is cancelled for this year.

Graduating during the pandemic slowed down my process and is part of why I did two postdocs. Now as a first year faculty, all the federal grants are frozen. I love the work I do but this has all of us questioning how much www.science.org/content/arti...
Undergraduate research opportunities are incredibly valuable, both for the students and for the progress of the work. And having undergraduate research experience is a massive help for grad school admission. REU cancellations harm students’ preparedness & career prospects, and slow research progress
We had a great discussion of the Dear Colleague letter to universities in class Thursday and I have all of you to thank for it. I promised I'd report back, so here goes.
This is the end result- and goal- of Reagan's "compassionate conservatism".
And, many people ride out recessions in grad school... I remember the larger cohort sizes after the Great Recession hit. Career changers AND those who couldn't find a good job post-undergrad sought graduate education between 2008 & 2012 (and beyond).
I'm concerned that won't be an option this time.
At least 12 universities now have hiring freezes and nearly 30 have cut PhD admissions this year
If you hear of other places you can add them to this google doc:
"These kinds of shocks are going to lead to a mass exodus … for minorities in particular.”
For my latest @science.org story, I spoke with early career researchers who have been affected by the federal upheaval and are concerned about what it means for their future.

DEI initiatives are still legal.
Universities need to stand their ground.
A Friday gift to your university's General Counsel Office - courtesy of an all star lineup of civil rights lawyers and scholars. You're going to want to read this.
The doublespeak of we value diversity but will erase the word diversity from all university programs that many universities have taken is next level gaslighting
For anyone working in Higher Ed concerned about the anti-DEI Dear Colleague letter calling on colleges to rid themselves of DEI programs, please read this letter by law professors who KNOW THE LAW--it's a good rejoinder to the letter and over-reach of this admin.

The University of Pittsburgh confirmed Friday that there would be no new Ph.D. offers of admission while Pitt works to understand how reduced federal aid could impact the institution.
Universities across the US have froze graduate student admissions.Students & faculty raise alarm about research funding, doctoral stipends, visas & career opportunities.

Cuts to NSF expected to be at 50% reduction in force for an independent agency that fuels discovery and innovation.
"The NSF budget was $9B, or 0.13% of the total [budget]."
This is not about fiscal prudence. This is about killing universities.

Underrepresented minority faculty in the USA face a double standard in promotion & tenure decisions, with more negative votes, lower chance of receiving unanimous votes and harsher evaluation of scholarly productivity. URM women experience largest double standards. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
