you can apply this in general to a lot of franchises that have 80s/90s origins and still get new entries
it creates a type of younger fan that loves the new games but will only ever engage with the series history from a distance, filtered through content creators
without watching more than a few minutes I at least respect the willingness to try to meet an old game on its terms
was talking about this with a friend a while ago but there are resi fans that refuse to play the old games because they are intimidated by "dated" tank control schemes or whatever
I understand s1 is a bit of an anomaly that doesn't really reflect what the series became later but you can still see the innate cynicism running underneath the hood, so to speak

As someone who has managed to remain relatively insulated from the simpsons as a cultural institution (steamed hams and youtube retrospectives aside), finally sitting down and actually watching some season 1 has been somewhat of an eye opening experience
