“Why is outsourcing the social part of the website to an AI”

Well, no, because Why can still participate in discussions that are actually discussions

But yes, if my notifications on some posts were mostly strangers calling me an idiot or worse & lying/ spreading misinformation I might also do that

The worst part of social media, by far, is the incentive to see who can be the meanest to strangers they perceive as an outgroup or otherwise deserving

We live in a society, act like it

I blocked well over 100 toxic, antisocial people in this thread and you should too

You can’t help but polarize yourself one way or another if you let people who behave this way into your feed day in & day out. They have nothing interesting to say and are not going to change their minds. Just block

Purely on vibes, this is what I’d have expected

The thing being attempted here is pretty straightforwardly dirty politics. It’s hard to justify as policy on any level

I get the argument that this is a time where dirty politics is necessary. But that’s a hard sell for some ppl, and hard to message

I think this special election might look a little funny compared to everything else. The Republican messaging has been pretty good, and although I’m pretty pragmatic as these things go, even I’m a little uncomfortable with what’s being attempted here

We will see I guess!

I think we have acquired some Dems in Congress who learned something since 2021, but I think people are far too optimistic about exactly how many

Yeah… at Penn State where I did my grad work, Human Development and Family Studies has a bunch of education researchers and was easily the most rigorous quant social science department on campus. But the ed departments themselves… mixed

Our system pretty much guarantees that you will never have more than two major national parties for any significant period of time due to its design features. One of several reasons no one else uses it

I feel like when this came out somebody I knew was really into “Modern World” and played it for me and I was kinda “eh, whatever” and never really listened further, and then like 10 years later I listened to the whole thing and it’s truly great

Historically the minimum support threshold for a seat was comically low and it’s still 3%, which it was raised to in 2014. That’s the biggest one

It’s been a very long time, I feel like there are other details

Yeah I’m not going to “hand it to Trump”, but I’m not so negatively polarized that I’m going to pretend I don’t think this one particular thing is good. Now, I personally still wouldn’t get on camera with him, but I’m (fortunately) not Joe Rogan

Well, also, Israel has a uniquely dysfunctional parliamentary system due to uncommon bad rules. It’s literally a “look at this goofy shit” example they teach in undergrad comparative politics

Today I’m thinking of the two accomplished Black women who came forward in 2019 and publicly shared what Justin Fairfax did to them. They saved Virginia from making this man governor, as he compared himself to Emmett Till.

I am sure they are wrecked today. No one wants to be vindicated like this.

People do not like to hear this, but every dysfunctional organization I’ve ever worked for had, at its core, an unwillingness to fire people who sucked

Imagine what it would be like to have a competent governor of California. I think third-term Jerry Brown is maybe the only thing in the ballpark in my adult life, and even that is a stretch

You will never guess who did this to me (you could)

Obviously happens way more to women though, not trying to take away from that!
