My students rely heavily on AI, and consume distressing amounts of ultra short-form media like TikTok, reels, and YouTube shorts. Their ability to distinguish what's real from what is computer-generated is also super concerning. It's really difficult to engage with them. >_<

Being weirdly tech and education adjacent, it's really discouraging how much an AI takeover seems to be regarded and inevitable, and something we as a consumer society need to simply resign to in order to facilitate corporate gains. :(

Sometimes it's nice to feel like I'm in middle school team sports again! 😅

I think it's telling, (and also fucked up,) that I'm genuinely concerned for my own safety when it comes to whether or not to be visible on tee dee 0 vee today. There was a hate crime in my neighborhood last Thursday. The victim sustained "considerable damage" to their face and stomach from a group of men shouting slurs, before the victim escaped into a local business to get help. I fear what would have happened had the victim not escaped. As much as it's important for people to be visible today, I think it's just as important, (if not more so,) that allies are visible today too. Let us know we're safe around you. Let us know that we can come to you for help and protection. Let us know that you still consider us just as human as you are. Because right now, we're under attack. Our rights and safety and bodies are subject to scrutiny and hatred from this administration. Our identities deem us targets, and simply existing makes us vulnerable. Today doesn't feel like a time where we all feel safe to celebrate. We're still here, and always have been. Help us continue to be, please.
