NSF needs to hear from you. Among other points, I suggested: keep politics out of science; stop using the threat of cancelling scientific grants to try to control universities; increase NSF funding for fundamental research. Pls send around. Deadline is January 27. Thanks

"In 2025, 40% of women aged 15 to 44 say they would move abroad permanently if they had the opportunity. The current figure is four times higher than the 10% who shared this desire in 2014, when it was generally in line with other age and gender groups."
How did we let our politicians turn us into a society that resents public services, support, and kindness?
How did we let them convince us that human decency and empathy are wrong?
We really need to sort ourselves out before we kill ourselves through selfishness.
Folks have been telling me they’ve noticed I’ve gotten “a lot more political” on social media this year.
Of course I have.
The circumstances have gotten nightmarishly worse, and the consequences of inaction and staying silent infinitely more obvious.
Everyone needs to get “a lot more political.”

Lucky to see some northern lights here in New Hampshire.
There are some days (weeks? years?) you just don't have it. Just keep going. Even by random chance, something good will happen.
Ecological connectivity is how easily wildlife, water, seeds, and nutrients can move from one natural area to another.

Extremely disappointing that NH music hall cancels annual fundraiser for NH Women's Foundation due to it showing a film on abortion rights. Canceling 6 days prior is not being "neutral", it's a political statement.

Military members lined up at a food bank because Trump's shutdown means that people aren't getting paid.
This video from @scrippsnews.bsky.social is getting wide circulation on Instagram, which is where I downloaded it from Don Lemon's account.

It’s a "crisis" when immigrants "take jobs away", but "innovation" when machines do. Funny.

This didn’t generate a ton of front-page headlines, but Trump this week signed an executive order rewarding Qatar with a NATO-like security guarantee — without bothering to go through Congress.

Trump just ordered the military into Portland, and he’s giving them the green light to use lethal force on American citizens.
Authoritarianism is an abstract concept but Trump is making its impacts real and tangible. Let’s be real about it: This is the beginning of dictatorship in America.

Many of the critters that grow on substrates of the ocean represent lower levels of the food web. We sampled some of them for stable isotope and energy density analysis, to better understand the flow of energy in the Gulf of Maine!
All of that life growing on the receiver likely decreased its ability to detect our tagged cod (and other tagged animals in the area), but was still getting some detections so didn't completely block it from working!
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has long helped pay for PBS, NPR and 1,500 local radio and television stations and programs like “Sesame Street.
The massive list of suspended UCLA grants came out today: 300 NSF and 500 NIH grants. I am miraculously not on the list, but this is devastating. Science will be lost, progress will be frozen, people will lose jobs, and careers in science and medicine are being destroyed. This is not ok.

Grateful for commercial diving services that retrieved this acoustic telemetry receiver for us that we have been trying to get back for the last 3 to 4 months.
Quite the settlement plate it became over the last 15 months. Fingers crossed for good data!
Are you an early-career biologist or ecologist who would benefit from an invited seminar? Would you like to come to UMaine next fall or spring to give a talk? Leave a brief comment with some info about what you do. I'm co-hosting our seminar series again, and am filling out our rosters.
