I often think that if we had better physics instruction in high school, we’d have safer roads. But I’m starting to think we also need better math education around averages so we can have more informed conversations about everyday transport

How fast do they think vehicles travel through cities? That sounds way higher than the average achieved by a motor vehicle in urban spaces
Father Ted, Season 4
It was a public event in Anacostia, DC where I had all sorts of hands-on-learning for kids as an companion event to public input for a street design project - great fun & kids loved it but I have hung my hat up on this line of work
Start ‘em young…15-minute city brainwashing afoot
This one made our day. ⭐
Shaina Longway, an elementary school teacher near Morgan State University, runs a snail mail club where students write letters to their heroes.
Suburban ‘No Kings’ - the Park & Ride edition
This driving behavior is systemic & not random - choosing to 'beat the light' is influenced by low enforcement. Red light cameras/enforcement leads to measurable behavior change - keeping the status quo means kids see rule-breaking being normalized
sometimes I think that if we just taught geometry & physics better at elementary & secondary levels to all, our transportation design, operation & roadway safety would improve exponentially
there’s something about simple pleasures & the beauty of (curated) nature that restores my faith in humanity
Spent time in Dublin hospitals as a child patient + later delivering meals as a summer job + used robots in current work, so I have opinions.
I still recall hospital conversations years later, but robots - no personality, no jokes, no warmth. They’ve their place, but not in this key role with kids
It wasn’t a race… but of course it was..a bit predictable that Maggie was the one driving...imagine if they’d added a woman on a standard bike to the mix (as well as e-bike)..that could have made for a real surprise in the results for those who may not have realized which is the most reliable mode
Eight-year-old Cabra resident calls on council to provide a pump track in his local park. “Pump tracks are very fun,” says Oran Wood, who discovered the hilly tracks while visiting his cousins. Pump tracks can be traversed on bikes, skateboards, skates and scooters.
Howth on a sunny day is a great example of the high cost of free parking
I keep thinking it could become an unchecked version of something we already experience - the not insignificant traffic created by drivers just circling looking for parking. Except with AVs, that 'circling' could happen all the time & unchecked - at least now the drivers eventually lose patience
Missed you at the expo! I picked up several Cleverhood jackets - I was doing my holiday shopping early - they make perfect gifts & are easy to mail or tuck into luggage for grown children who live far away
Seattle Public Schools PE Director asked where $$$$$$ from all those school-zone tickets was going (A: general fund) =>now SPS students have most comprehensive biking ed programs in U.S - curriculum, instruction, & equipment from PK through MS. And traffic gardens too

A decade or so ago, the Seattle Public Schools PE Director asked where $$ from all those school-zone tickets was going (A: general fund) - now SPS students have most comprehensive biking ed programs in U.S - curriculum, instruction, & equipment from PK through MS. And traffic gardens. Just saying.
When my son first got the board game Diplomacy, my mother warned me “Your brothers wore a hole in the good room carpet playing that game.” Our carpets survived… and he grew up to become a game designer. Now his sister is writing about a great board game space in Skerries
Wow! Great job by hero-partner Tia
Some slight improvement in specific spots but still chick-a-block with these trip situations & hazards
In all fairness, this is no longer the case....but it only was improved because the system went to all day kindergarten...the equivalent kindergarten would have a somewhat shorter bus ride today but they are still likely on the bus for an extended period
I see your car line and raise it! A kindergartener who lived across the street from the school (literally looking at it) bused 45 minutes to get there every afternoon.
Backstory: 5-lane arterial with ROR, making it nearly impossible for pedestrians to cross safely + 1/2-day K necessitating own bus
Missing connections and gaps in pedestrian networks that linger for years really get my goat. Can you imagine the same kind of long-term breaks in the connected networks we’ve created for motor vehicles? Doesn't happen
A new disabled persons’ organisation has launched in Dublin. The Dublin DPO aims to bring together voices from across coalitions – groups for the blind, the mobility impaired, the autistic, and more.
The Voorhees Transportation Center in NJ has been casting a light on the safety challenges & lack of respect for crossing guards face for years. Plus they’ve backed it up with training programs. Here’s a recent report: www.saferoutesnj.org/wp-content/u...
Congratulations to our friends at the Fairfax Alliance for Better Bicycling (FABB) on 20 years of advancing better biking in Fairfax!
FABB honored key advocacy champions, including our very own Sonya Breehey, recognizing her leadership in active transportation.
