Yes! And this is in part why I've long wanted to teach a class on small media — because compression presents interesting technical, epistemological + ontological challenges; because small stuff creates aesthetic possibilities + allows for 😈 distribution... (👇 from a course pitch deck :)

I wrote a quick tutorial for a student on how to use to R to get Whisper to automatically transcribe your audio. I figured others might find it useful too. #linguistics joeystanley.com/blog/whisper/

I've started working on a (very incomplete!) starter pack for social interaction researchers! If you're working in this space, please asked to be added (or suggest others)! Meant to be inclusive of many disciplines, methods, interaction types, and types of interacting agents: go.bsky.app/44VAEhU
American science and medicine has been thrown into chaos and uncertainty over the past week. Here are some stories to get up to speed. 1/12
Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research.
I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.
A table, on which two bowls of chips sit. The left bowl is teal, the right is white. There is a folded piece of paper in front of the bowls that says “which chip is your favorite?” The paper has been folded and written on to include experimental feedback, including: “Bowl maybe a confound?” “I agree, teal is prettier. Bowl position should be counterbalanced” “The chips are the same!!! (I think) (stop trying to trick me)” “Fold and vote after tasting- don’t look @ results and be biased!”
Someone put up a chip taste-test experiment in the Stanford linguistics kitchen… and we’ve all collectively decided to criticize the methodology and improve it 😂
The American Dialect Society Word of the Year: RAWDOG
To rawdog: taking on life without the usual protection, preparation, or comfort. Whether it’s diving into a challenge unprepared or skipping the safety net, rawdogging is about embracing risk, stone-cold sobriety, and rolling with it. #LSA2025
Bill Labov has passed away after a long and extraordinary life. The founder of variationist sociolinguistics and the academic adviser and grand-adviser to so many in our field. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues, and students today.
Bill Labov died this morning. I'm not coherent enough to talk about how important and influential and brilliant he was. I am very sad.
I was so lucky to know him, and I am grateful every day that he (and Gillian, and Walt, etc) built an academic field where kindness is expected.
He's also putting the glamour back into grammar on YouTube now! 🎶 #linguistics

Pessimist: the cup is half empty
Linguist: could you say "cup" again? Where did you grow up?
