Texas losing a billion dollars a year on data center tax break The tax break is one of the state’s costliest incentive programs and soon to be the most expensive of its kind in the nation.

Texas is losing $3.2 BILLION in tax revenue over the next two years to the tax incentives it's handing out to data centers, and this is probably an underestimate. Meanwhile, the state is struggling to fund things like education and disaster response.

Data centers seem to be moving to the front of the line — at least for some equipment — thanks to the jaw-dropping amounts of cash they have on hand. Utilities, meanwhile, often must finance purchases for major pieces of infrastructure.

Harry Sideris, president and CEO of Duke Energy, said at a CERAWeek panel that his company has been doing things they’ve “never dreamed of” to serve data centers.

“We got Caterpillar reciprocating engines on the back of a flatbed — a tractor trailer — to get somebody online three months earlier because they’re making $10 million a day,” Sideris said.

That $10 million a day — that’s for just one data center, he said.

“The cost of doing that is negligible to what they’re making, so doing creative things [to bring them online] is really powerful for them,” Sideris said.

I will never understand how anyone can look at a situation like this and think "man, data centres and AI are really going to help solve climate change and incentivse renewable energy"

So, I put the calculation experiment from my article on this in

www.linkedin.com/pulse/chatbo...

Right answer! Cool!

But it went from 0.2 watt hours to 6.8 watt hours. IE, it goes from 2.5 million times more energy than a calculator to ~62 million times more energy than a calculator

[Press release] Médecins Sans Frontières: Gilead refuses to sell groundbreaking HIV prevention drug to MSF In an open letter, MSF called on Gilead to immediately sell the organization lenacapavir for use in its medical programs worldwide.

Gilead has a drug that could prevent HIV with just 2 injections a year. MSF said "we'll buy it name your price." Gilead said no.
Let that sink in. Pharmacological innovation without access for those who need it does not accomplish its potential.

An underrated addendum to the Bowling Alone story is that North America's largest bowling operator (Bowlero) is a publicly traded company whose business model involves buying mom and pop alleys, shutting down the leagues, and trying to attract casual, higher paying, one-off players.

What is going to make university degrees worthless isn’t niche subjects like languages or the entire human past, it’s charging to teach people “content-creator” skills they can learn on the can

Another university getting rid of things you could only ever do at a university and replacing them with stuff a 13-year-old can do on a phone

"A moratorium on new building new coal mines and on expanding existing ones would allow for a gradual phase out of the industry, which would in turn minimise the social and economic adjustment associated with worldwide commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions"

The US Postal Service is a service, not a business (hence the name). We should want to fund services that help Americans!

It costs us $9B/yr to make sure medications get delivered to seniors in rural areas and the many other benefits USPS provides.

The illegal war in Iran has already cost us $26B!

After leaving WHO, Trump officials propose more expensive replacement to duplicate it HHS proposes spending $2 billion a year to re-create systems the U.S. accessed through the WHO at a fraction of the cost, according to officials briefed on the matter.

Exclusive: After pulling out of WHO, the Trump administration is proposing spending $2 billion a year to replicate the global disease surveillance and outbreak functions the United States once helped build, which will cost about three times as much.

On Nov. 16, a mental health counselor recorded in Kamilla’s medical records that her mother reported the girl had lost her appetite after being “served food that contained worms.”

A week later, the couple said, children were told to gather in the gym for what they believed would be a Thanksgiving celebration. Excitement spread as families saw tables set with turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, they said. The children waited expectantly. But when a parent asked when the celebration would begin, Oksana said, staff told them the holiday meal was for employees, not detainees.

The children, she said, watched despondently as the feast was packed away.

On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast.

The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me.

But the food wasn’t for detainees — it was for the staff.

Sable Offshore Wins Court Battle over Oil Pipelines Enviro groups vow to continue the fight to stop the permit that would allow the restart of pipelines in Santa Barbara County.

A 2-judge panel rejected an emergency appeal by environmental groups to block the Trump administration's permit to Exxon-backed Sable offering no insights as to how they arrived at their conclusion. OpenAI Reportedly Planning to Make ChatGPT "Prioritize" Advertisers in Conversation OpenAI employees working on ChatGPT report plans to unleash sponsored advertisements above organic results.

“This could look like a user asking how much ibuprofen to take for a headache receiving a promoted ad for Advil in the chatbot’s response. Meanwhile, actual results on correct dosage may be brushed to the side, or buried under a mountain of ad text…”
