BREAKING: The U.S. bishops’ Committee on Doctrine just issued a formal statement defending Pope Leo XIV's teaching authority on just war doctrine — less than twelve hours after JD Vance told a Turning Point USA crowd the pope should “be careful” talking theology.
This is a serious escalation.

An infographic titled "How did the Trump administration stall out the EV industry so fast?" Three points are listed with checkmarks: Frozen funds (unlawfully froze billions for EV chargers and battery mineral processing), Killed tax credits (canceled the $7,500 EV tax credit), and Lowered standards (gutted fuel economy rules). The graphic features a road at the bottom.
The Trump administration's attack on electric vehicles has endangered the U.S. auto industry—failing both American workers and consumers. www.americanprogress.org/article/the-trump-admini...
Supply shocks are inflationary. The article has examples of the current implications for air travel, freight, semiconductors, aluminum. The longer the war in Iran continues, the more it is likely to increase the price you pay. This profits the fossil fuel industry at everyone else’s expense.
A line chart from the Center for American Progress illustrates the correlation in food prices, fertilizer prices, and natural gas prices since 2010.
Natural gas is about 80 percent of the cost of producing fertilizer, and you can see how fuel price fluctuations show up in in grocery prices:
A line chart from the Center for American Progress illustrates the correlation in electricity prices and natural gas since 2010.
Electricity rates are increasingly influenced by global natural gas prices, too:
A line chart from the Center for American Progress illustrates the correlation in gasoline and crude oil since 2010.
Check out the graphs showing the correlation between fuel prices internationally and domestically (thanks especially to increasing export infrastructure built in the last ten year). Here's the impact on gasoline prices since 2010:
Our new piece breaks down how these price increases for oil and gas will flow through to the U.S. economy, raising the prices of gasoline, electricity, fertilizer, and more.

A line chart from the Center for American Progress shows that crude oil futures have increased 41 percent in the nine days since Operation Epic Fury began, which outpaces similar price increases following the Russian Invasion of Ukraine and other recent conflicts.
This reckless war on Iran has raised energy prices like no other. It's outpacing even Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Suzie Wiles needs some help thinking of ideas to lower gas prices. Any suggestions? How about:
• Don't bomb Iran.
• Restore fuel economy standards.
• Offer rebates to people who want an EV but can't yet afford one.
Trump's empty promise that AI data centers will lower electricity prices isn’t backed by reality. Americans support data centers powered by clean energy—not fossil fuels that risk even higher utility bills.
Trump and his family have already taken more than $2 billion for themselves since he was elected by selling the presidency.

"This is the kind of corruption that shreds the fabric of a nation, and we are working on it like you wouldn't believe."
Fact check: true.
When Trump says he likes the way this economy is running, it's because he likes making you pay coal and gas execs more money.
And his long-sought destruction of all vehicle efficiency standards is going to INCREASE gasoline prices for everyone.
Turns out that blocking clean energy is a bad plan. His policies are set to cut the amount of new energy that will be added over the next decade in HALF.

Trump said he'd cut energy prices in half. Electricity is up 13 percent. What gives?
Trump’s EPA has gutted lifesaving environmental protections, including limits on harmful chemicals and toxic pollution produced by:
-Gas and coal power plants
-Oil and gas refineries
-Petrochemical & chemical manufacturers
-Pesticide manufacturers
“Make America Healthy Again.”
The Trump administration is putting Big Oil first once again with its plans to withdraw from the UNFCCC, the bedrock of all international climate cooperation—and Americans will pay the price.
Last night, the Trump administration withdrew the United States from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)—the foundational 1992 treaty that established the entire framework for international climate cooperation.
This is unprecedented and dangerous.
Today is the one year anniversary of one of California's deadliest wildfires. There's no denying climate change is fueling these deadly fires, which haven taken everything from survivors like Katie and Marco.
Roughly 1//3 of the families who would have switched to an EV in the coming decade will instead continue to drive on gasoline because of Trump's disastrous policies.
The way we'll experience that: higher prices and worse selection. The best cars just won't be available in America.
New York Times reports that "The focus on Venezuela intensified after late May, when Mr. Trump was upset about tough negotiations involving Chevron. Venezuela’s oil has been more central to Mr. Trump’s deliberations than previously reported."
www.nytimes.com/2025/12/27/u...
Now NYT is reporting that Trump had to let Chevron's claims expire in order to win the votes of some anti-Maduro members of Congress for passage of OBBBA.
But Chevron wanted back in, and this was part of the deliberations in the White House about escalating attacks.
What do oil companies get out of war with Venezuela? It is cheaper to produce oil there, and companies are desperate for resources that will remain profitable to extract even as global EV sales start to crush oil prices.
Chevron is the only one with rights to produce there...
I can hardly believe that the Trump team's plans for fuel economy standards are so bad that — not only will car buyers have to pick from a market full of gas guzzlers — but so many more people will be buying so much more gas that prices will rise by more than $0.25 a gallon.
"rising home insurance premiums, driven higher by climate change, are cascading into the broader real estate market and eating into home values in the most disaster-prone areas."

4 Senators defected in March but not November: Schumer, Schatz, Gillibrand, Peters.
