Oh no! Hope you're ok 😬

In all seriousness, this is a genuine learning experience. The students bring all they've learned to critically analyse the film. From the volcanology to crisis management and how people's behaviour in these situations is depicted. It raises really great discussions. Not all of it bad (or good).
In many ways though what's depicted isn't far off from how volcanologists describe Pinatubo in 1991. Or perhaps Rabaul. Obviously shortened timelines and Hollywood -ised.
😬🫣
I love that the lead volcanologist is Anne Heche.
The volcanology is better in Dantes Peak than Supervolcano. In general, I do like the depiction of volcano monitoring techniques and different volcanic phenomena.
It's a great film to watch critically with students.
I openly giggle at that part.

Love this. The exception might be cuneiform…almost everything you read has not felt the light of day for thousands of years.
Every ancient letter, receipt, star map, math problem, or fragment of a poem is new again. It adds to our knowledge and remembrance. It absolutely is thrilling 🧡
I prefer physical copies of things I buy. CDs, DVDs, books...

The institute for geosciences at Ruhr University Bochum is searching for a curator/research associate. 🧪 @geohenning.bsky.social
Photograph of a dvd case propped against Travel coffee mug. The dvd is Dante's Peak. On the cover are the heads of Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton on a backdrop of a pyroclastic cloud. In the background, a projector screen has a very 90s DVD menu for Dantes Peak.
Today was the last time I'll teach volcanology at the University of Hull! So we ended the module in style.
I didn't realize how awful the White House's proposed cuts were for the USGS - almost a 1/3 reduction in Natural Hazards funding?? Elimination of ecosystem science??
This may be just a proposal, but we need to ensure Congress doesn't taker up anything so drastic. Geologists, spread the word!
But is it sediment laden? I think to English speakers, slush suggests wet ice. No debris.
Japanese-speaking volcanologists!
What's the best geological translation of yukishiro?
I'm reading something that refers to them as "slush flows" but it's lahar or mudflow better? With the description that they are snow-melt derived?
I think there are some great apps out there now with guided programmes. I don't have these so can't recommend but over on Insta I like HenleyFitness and SoheeFit who both have what looks like sensible app training programmes. HenleyFitness tellls you what you've lifted in equivalent animals 😁
E.g. I don't chase 1rep max (e.g. heaviest weight I can lift once) because my goal is muscle endurance. So I do 3x10-15 reps. Start at 3x10 at what feels hard. But once I can rep 15 easily, I up the weights.
Other advice out there would have me doing much lower reps. Others lighter weights!
Either increasing weight with fewer reps, or increasing reps with lighter weights is progressive overload. Or depends on your fitness goals. You'll find advice online pushing either. You need to think about what your goals are.

Book authors!!
If you're in a bookshop and you see your book... Do you sign it? Do you do it stealth or do you ask? Do bookshops welcome random signing? Or do you just take a cheeky selfie with it?
Or are you so cool and blasé that you don't even check to see if it's on the shelf?
These "discover something" journals from Springer Nature are here to steal your research money, as those from MDPI and Frontiers (and many others). ⚒️ 🧪

Impact geology celebration on the Moon yesterday with Artemis II. One of the key skills geologists employ is to make observations with our own eyes. We draw what we see, we describe what we see. It means we pay attention to detail to ask further questions.
This is the face of a lunar scientist who has just been told that the #Artemis II crew saw SEVERAL impact flashes (the flashes when meteors hit the lunar surface) in real time 😃 🌓💥
A full disc image of Earth, as seen from the Orion Crew Module. The planet is a pale blue, swirling with white clouds and glowing slightly lighter blue in place from reflected light. At lower left, a large brown landmass is Africa, with Spain and Portugal with twinkling lights where the planet curves. At top right, auroras glow in a thin green glow, just barely separated from the planet's surface. Earth is set against the black of space (pic: NASA/R.Wiseman)
More context on this #Artemis II image:
* This is the night side, lit by moonlight. You can see city lights in Spain & Portugal, & a sliver of day at lower right
* The Sun is entirely behind Earth, which makes it a kind of solar eclipse, but w/ Earth doing the eclipsing instead of the Moon:

Don't know. But this isn't quackery.
Yeah. Geology content accessible to wide audiences on TikTok and Insta.

I didn't notice the auroras until now!!!
No. Instagram and Facebook. They're not active here. People have called it out in the comments on those sites but there's been no response. I don't follow but I know mutuals do. It's disappointing.

Yep. When they insist on making it with gluten free bread 🫣 I once got in argument with someone who refused to seem me a sausage roll because it had egg on it, when we asked for a check on ingredients for dairy. 😵💫
