Baggage Fees Are Up. Here’s How to Avoid Them. Airline passengers are feeling the pain in rising fees, as the war in Iran weighs on the price of jet fuel. Loyalty programs and certain credit cards can help ease the burden.

Likely to be overheard next week while boarding:
"No, sir, that steamer trunk will not fit in the overhead"
"Ma'am, I'm sorry but 3 Macy's shopping bags do count as luggage"
"Excuse me, but that Everest-appropriate backpack isn't a 'personal item'" www.nytimes.com/2026/04/21/t...

Most doctors say they’ve had to intervene after patients accessed misinformation, survey finds Earlier this year, another survey found that people who followed health advice from AI were five times more likely to experience harms than those who did not

This, combined with moves like AB’s plan to let people bypass referrals for diagnostics, is a formula for putting additional pressure on an already stressed health system. Yet prov govts continue to whistle past the graveyard & pretend all is fine. www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...

All of our faculty councils have reps from the other faculties who attend as observers. A colleague from another faculty always tells people, "Sign up to be the rep to Arts Faculty Council ... their mtgs are insane! Incredibly entertaining if you're not actually part of it!"

Stephen Lewis, humanitarian and former Ontario NDP leader, dies at 88 Lewis, who spent the latter part of his life campaigning for HIV/AIDS victims in Africa, died in hospital Tuesday after a battle with cancer

As an undergrad I picked up Lewis @ the Edmonton Airport & drove him to a speaking engagement on campus. The long drive gave me plenty of time to talk to him about his life in politics & his work at the UN ... a memorable conversation w a fascinating man. www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...

That’s is definitely a fun fact …

Tho I suspect a fed/prov split in the NDP is inevitable, I wish Nenshi & Beck had held off firing the first shots. Lewis at least deserved a chance to make a big tent for everyone. I’m not sure he wants a big tent, but by hitting out first they look like poor losers & give Lewis the high ground.

Timothy Caulfield Says Celebrity Culture and Algorithms Fuel Health Misinformation The acclaimed health policy expert and member of the Order of Canada addressed the escalating misinformation crisis in his recent 2026 Woodrow Lloyd Lecture.

For some reason I missed this when it was first posted. A nice piece from the UofR Website on @caulfieldtim.bsky.social's 2026 Woodrow Lloyd Lecture earlier this month

Alberta government moves to drastically reduce access to medically assisted dying EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's government took steps Wednesday to drastically restrict who's eligible for medical assistance in dying.

Question for @caulfieldtim.bsky.social. What are the legal protections for a doc communicating medical advice to their patients? Can the gov't limit when and how docs bring up legally available services? Asking for your home province! www.timescolonist.com/national-new...

Have not had a chance to look at the SK budget in detail, but kudos for the 3% increase in funding to PSE in the prov (plus some targeted funding in specific areas). This is not what we have come to expect from this govt, so the surprise is a pleasant one. Other provs take note ...

That this question is being asked is troubling. I believe it's because our confidence in the system being there when we need it has declined. As that happens, those w $$ will consider (understandably) buying services privately. It is a result of our inability to enact real reform for decades.

Over and over again it has been shown that expanding capacity inside the public system is more cost effective than contracting to private entities. And it comes with the ability to alter what the ORs are used for as needs and priorities change. We are doubling down on a failed strategy.

So why am I so skeptical? First, they didn't fulfill the promises made in the 2010 Patients First Review. Fool me once ... Second, the "plan" is really vague on the timelines for the proposed changes and innovations and that worries me. There's nothing that holds their feet to the fire ...

It's hard to disagree with much of what is in SK's Patients First plan. But that's because it very much resembles plans we've been seeing from prov govts (including this one) in the 25 year's since the Romanow Report. It says all the right things and paints a compelling picture of the future 1/2

BACK TO THE FUTURE DEPT: Today the Sask Party govt released its Patients First strategy. Sound familiar? That’s cuz in 2010 the Sask Party govt released the Patients First Review. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Next year, they’ll announce they’re creating 32 health districts …

My pet peeve in this area is the persistent hawking of dubious "wellness" quackery by otherwise respectable media outlets. I love the @crooked.com podcasts but really dislike their constant advertorials for scientifically questionable "health and wellness" products. It's so disappointing from them.

Thanks for this info, Laurie, it is appreciated. I had completely overlooked this aspect of NPs in the province.

1 month ago 1 0 0 0

So who has been paying NPs already in the system? I’m not aware that any NPs were billing patients directly in SK. And does this mean we may see NPs on a fee- for-service schedule? That would be counterproductive wouldn’t it?
