But I actually think it gets at the heart of what differentiates art made by humans from art made by a model. It’s not just that you’re creating something, it’s not just about the output; it’s that the process itself expresses your humanity, your inner life, your perspective.

In the age of AI, I've started to like the term “expressive” rather than "creative" to describe the arts.

Maybe it's just because “creative” has become so burdened by, idk, corporate ideas.

Funny thing about American mass media is how woke content is broadly popular, routinely pays for itself, and sometimes goes blockbuster, whereas right-wing content is a narrow niche that rarely reaches breakeven, never goes blockbuster, and usually requires immense subsidies for it to exist at all.

Kémy Adé was shocked by the immigration refusal letter she received.
In rejecting her permanent residence application, the Immigration Department cited her current job duties, which included wiring and assembling control circuits, building control and robot panels, programming and troubleshooting. The department said these duties didn’t match the Canadian work experience she claimed.
Well, no, they didn’t. Adé is a post-doctoral research fellow and guest teacher at McMaster University — and those skills are not part of her repertoire. Nor are they what she submitted in her immigration application a year ago.
“I saw this language about this job description that has nothing to do with me,” said the health scientist from France, who has a PhD from Sorbonne University in the immunology of aging. “I was disoriented how this could happen.”
But a disclaimer at the bottom of the refusal letter might provide a hint.
It’s believed to be the first time that the department explicitly referred to the use of generative AI to support application processing in immigration refusals. The disclaimer also noted that all generated content was verified by an officer and that generative AI was not used to make or recommend a decision.

Today in AI:

Canada rejected the PR application of a McMaster postdoc from the Sorbonne who works in the immunology of aging because the generative AI being used to process applications (😱) entirely hallucinated her credentials.

Everyone involved should be fired.

Yes, here's the 'long' version: climateintegrity.org/uploads/medi...

I was a chemist (organic mainly too) when starting out, so I've always had some suspicions about this. Cardboard or 'nothing' (shopping bags) rule.

Exclusive: Humans — not AI — are to blame for deadly Iran school strike, sources say The US missile attack is fueling global debate over AI and the military.

this is interesting reporting but i think it’s worth pointing out that even if ai were to blame, humans would still be to blame www.semafor.com/article/03/1...

This is a good time to remember that immigration judges aren’t real judges.

They work for DOJ as part of the executive branch (under Bondi and Trump) and the fact that we call them judges like they’re independent arbiters would be laughable in a free and fair country.

EXTREMELY important point, this isn't to demonize or blame porn, it's about biases and stereotypes. it's the way these models reach for porn when the prompt is simply "woman"

once you learn how much training data images of women come from porn, it illuminates so much. this is more than bad to look at, it's the rot of misogyny in full display.

Why AI Chatbots Agree With You Even When You’re Wrong Language models often abandon correct answers to please users. Scientists are studying why—and are teaching AI to push back.

“Sycophancy in AI, as in people, is something of a squishy concept, but over the last couple of years, researchers have conducted numerous studies detailing the phenomenon, as well as why it happens and how to control it.”

Good words of warning here. AI models are generally designed to read and incorporate (and, in a sense, believe) virtually everything they find online, with very few guardrails. The information can get divorced from its original source, context, & rebuttals or retractions. That's a really big problem

Like most rational and scientific minded people, I take my cues on the healthcare needs of minority groups from the Catholic Church, the Alliance Defending Freedom, and sundry rightwing influencers with a weird fixation on birth rates. I am the New York Times, a serious newspaper.

The New York Times will not ever stop New York Times-ing. It must be boycotted and atrophied out of existence. That is the only way. Same with the Atlantic.

At this point working for the Times needs to be considered as toxic as working for ICE.

(1/11) If you live in NY, you’ve probably started seeing a new warning: “THIS PRICE WAS SET BY AN ALGORITHM USING YOUR PERSONAL DATA.” This mandatory disclosure went into effect late last year, and it’s the first attempt by a US state to grapple with a new generation of surveillance pricing.

I really think AI romance simulators are the worse thing we could possibly have done to autistic young people and we are going to learn increasingly disturbing things about what this technology has done to us in the next few years.
