Artemis 2 was the furthest human voyage from Earth. Per the final JPL Horizons trajectory I estimate the max distance from the geocenter was 413145 km at 2304 UTC Apr 6 (about 4 km less and 1 min later than PAO's report at the time). (1 / n ).....

Just found that there's a German adaptation of Ghosts! That's the next thing for practising my German, then.

It's the time of the year that I get tongue-twisted trying to pronounce "Schrottwichteln".
(Somehow it just always trips me up.)
I thought it would be a good idea to switch the bibliography tool to biblatex+biber in our LaTeX template for students.
Apparently, the longer compilation time makes it impossible to use on the free-tier Overleaf. (Which I didn't think to check before rolling it out!)
Congrats!

My friend and colleague Remco Heesen once told me study of social epistemology of science made him "less trusting of any particular scientific paper but more impressed by science as a whole." I honestly think that's the right lesson to draw. But I think holding both attitudes doesn't come naturally.

And now I just found that Apple doesn't even follow the DIN standard German layout (surprise!), and the backslash is actually a fourth-level character (activated with Shift + AltGr/Option) on the German Mac keyboard.
Whenever I help a colleague with a LaTeX problem, one of the first questions I always have to ask is:
Where the fuck are backslash and curly brackets on the German keyboard again?
(For some reason Apple doesn't print third-level characters on their physical keyboards.)
The thing about Europe: it's the actual land of the free now.
Whatever problems Europe has - and it has plenty - it is looking pretty damn good by comparison these days.

The problem with most machine-based random number generators is that theyâre not TRULY random, so if you need genuine randomness it is sometimes necessary to link your code to an external random process like a physical noise source or the current rate of US tariffs on a given country.

The 75th Annual Conference of the International Communication Association (#ICA25), set for 12-16 June in Denver Colorado, USA, is shaping up to be ICAâs largest conference yet, tracking with Toronto and Paris in terms of preregistration numbers. At the same time, we are closely monitoring the evolving situation in the United States which has raised concerns for some members of the ICA community intending to participate. We recognize your concerns regarding the uncertain environment and appreciate your feedback and perspectives. We affirm ICAâs dedication to a global exchange of knowledge and perspectives and protecting the free exchange of ideas among our members and attendees. Current rhetoric and actions in some US communities run counter to ICAâs commitment to ensuring the full and equal participation of all members of our global academic community and conflict directly with ICA's IDEA principles.
Our immediate plan includes the following interventions, which aim to preserve your right as scholars to freely present your work and collaborate with your peers: As always, we have made standard invitation letters for visa purposes available via the submission website: you can find your letter attached to your profile in ScholarOne (the submission system). As of 19 February, we have done a new run of all letters without the title of the paper(s) mentioned; papers are identified by submission ID number so that your research topics are not mentioned. You may find these new letters in your profile as well.
The fact that this communication is now necessary ... for conferences happening in the *US* ... shocking.

With all these grammar checkers being âAI-basedâ, it feels like it should be much easier now to create such a tool that is explicitly more âLaTeX-awareâ. Is there one out there? #AcademicSky

To me, âshort messages from people you follow shown in chronological orderâ was very much the defining characteristic of Twitter. I find it an interesting (maybe Twitter-generational) divide that the âalgorithmicâ feed was so central to many people's perception of it.

See, maybe that's different for native speakers. But when I'm writing, at least 50% is paying attention to using the correct prepositions, finding good synonyms, and avoiding repetitions. Or I have to spread out these tasks over different iterations.

Plotted version of png converted to data with regression fit line. It appears there's a positive association between steps and sleep. But the simulated data points spell out "OH NO!"
Png showing "OH NO!" in black letters on white background
Here's a fun way to encourage students to always look at their data. A few years ago, I wrote a script that converts a black and white png to data and plots it.
