I want to teach new things, that’s the best part of my job. I’d never be mad at someone who genuinely wanted to put the effort in to acquire a new skill or new knowledge.

Makes me wonder how they imagine learning and what they imagine classes are for. And where those messages are coming from.

I hope my enthusiastic reply of “omg yes, that’s what college is for, learning about things you don’t already know about! We love people who want to learn something new!” maybe changed a few minds?

Who is shaming kids who are ignorant but curious about changing it by learning?

Beginning level language classes and “introduction to [X]” classes are meant specifically to teach people new things!!

At an undergrad recruitment event yesterday high schoolers kept asking me if they’d be allowed to start learning Chinese or Japanese if they don’t already know it. Yes!! Please!!

The circle of death is:

Cut faculty (or non-replace) so you offer fewer classes so fewer people enroll so you cut faculty so you offer fewer classes so fewer people enroll so then the market has spoken.

I feel that most people underappreciate Local Gazetteers #地方志 for their artistic value. They often contain lots of beautifully drawn pictures and maps of natural and populated areas in the region. Check out some of these pictures from the 熱河志!

Found a beautiful Shanhai jing #山海經 in our collection today. While the #illustrations in our 繪圖廣注-edition are reminiscent of Jiang Yinggao’s 蔣應鎬, they have something far more ornamental to them and at times feel almost comical. Really enjoyable read! #ChinaBooks

Screenshot from the email showing "Copyeditor's corner," an image of my book cover, and the following quote: "“I appreciated the author’s thoughtfulness and judgment in explaining the social and historical context. She’s a good engaging writer, never straying into academic jargon. [Teaching and Transformation in Popular Confucian Literature of the Late Qing] was one of those books I was sorry to finish.”

Really touched by today's email from @uofmpress.bsky.social that features a quote from Dan Otis, the press's copyeditor of my book, giving me such a lovely compliment on the work.

Browser history knows my dating habits so well that as soon as I start typing "sex-" it suggests en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexagen....

(yes after years of this I still have a few of those characters for which the pronunciation refuses to stick in my head, no matter how many flashcards I've made)

No MA first, but I spent 9 years in my PhD program, most of them feeling lost and terrified because I really didn’t have the background that many others seemed to have. But, I didn’t go into debt for grad school at least?

fuck me for being this person, i guess, but public universities are a civic good and shouldn’t be run like businesses. and if you’re going to insist on running them like so, at least do some market research. students like their professors; they don’t want MOOCs taught by ChatGPT.

Feeling a little wistful about missing #AAS2026 this year, especially because I could meet my book on the book floor if I were there. But traveling just to do that didn't make good sense. Have fun everyone, I'm with you in spirit! Enjoy some great panels for me!

One wonders what all the fuss was about, and why after completing all that research we all had to become typography and formatting experts?
