yeah, i think it's possible to write two vers characters as still having different preferences, rather than behaving exactly the same when they top/bottom... it's the sense of two characters being interchangable sex-wise that's a turn-off for me lol.

i don't usually feel very strongly about top/bottom hcs but i do like when a character feels like they HAVE sexual preferences. when characters in a ship aren't interchangably switchy, have likes and dislikes, different kinks (some compatible, some not). adds texture.

it's not really THAT popular to make ocs in a lot of fandoms, which i think is why i feel like an outlier in cartoon fandoms lol. i wonder if it's also more popular with fanartists or if their ocs are just more visible. 🤔 but yeah i usually only make ocs to serve the story of canon characters.
