Happy #EarthDay 🌍 — and happy 20th birthday to us!
To celebrate both, we just launched The Biochar Collection: tees, caps, and totes for everyone who believes #biochar can help regenerate the earth.

When did you first hear the word #biochar?
Our co-founder Professor Stephen Joseph reminisces on the first time he *made* biochar, which was back in 1975. But they didn't call it biochar back then. Their kiln was made out of granite rocks, because that's what they had.
And, you can save your spot in the course right now with our pre-sale. Learn more & hear from your instructor, Travis Mays: learn.biochar-international.org/p/biochar-op...

Speakers Negar Tafti, PhD, Rajveer Singh Brar, and Manoj Singh from TNC’s Global Provide Food & Water and PRANA team talked through what they're doing, why it matters, and got into the nitty-gritty specifics of the project.
Last week, we teamed up with The Nature Conservancy to demonstrate the results, learnings, and more from their biochar pilot in Punjab, India.
This is true in so many areas. We're working on creating more connectivity around regenerative disaster management. Biochar is such a key component to many areas of need - would love the opportunity to collaborate - check out the thread below and attend the webinar if this is of interest.
We're excited about that possibility as well! Have you seen this recent research (from Aug 2025)? www.theguardian.com/science/2025...

What began as a pioneering vision 20 years ago has now become a reality.
As we celebrate this anniversary of our organization, we’re also launching the next era of global scale for biochar: the next 20 years as we hope to see them.
This year, the International Biochar Initiative marks its 20th anniversary! 🎉
Over the past two decades, IBI, together with its leaders and community, has been at the forefront of advancing the understanding and development of biochar.
The goal? To help the sector learn faster, reduce duplicated effort, and make better-informed decisions across geographies, feedstocks, and production systems.
If you care about scaling biochar with stronger evidence and smarter collaboration, we’d love to have you there!
In an upcoming webinar, we’ll introduce the Biochar Resilience Network and explore a bold but practical idea: a pre-competitive Data Commons for anonymized biochar field trial results.

There’s no shortage of biochar trials. What’s missing? Shared learning.
Across the sector, field trials are producing valuable data, but much of it remains isolated and hard to access. (Which makes it difficult to compare!)
This slows progress for everyone.

Is there anywhere else in the UK that you can learn biochar skills hands-on?
We're running a weekend course this March! (FYI it's remarkable stuff: almost like upgrading the operating system of your soil, while also locking in carbon for 100s of years.)
