This was absolutely one of the most striking things about moving from suburban Atlanta to Manhattan when I was in my 20s. I remember being back home for a visit and, like, struggling to articulate to my parents just how different—and how much better and friendlier—the world felt on foot.

i can't help but think about 10 or 11 years ago when conservatives insisted that obama was uniquely anti-catholic because his administration thought that catholic-led orgs could just fill out a form if they didn't want to cover contraceptives in their health plans for employees.
Genuinely funny that Sonia Sotomayor issued a public apology today for her mild criticism of a conservative colleague on a specific, substantive issue, and then a few hours later Clarence Thomas picked up a mic and was like ALL LIBERALS ARE AMERICA-HATING COWARDS
Crazy things Pete Hegseth did YESTERDAY alone:
1) Fired head of the Army
2) Changed rules to allow military personnel to carry personal weapons on bases
3) Fired head of the Chaplain Corps
4) NBC reports he blocked promotions of a dozen Black or female officers
All further evidence for my column:
the trump administration is selling this country wholesale to rapacious, extractive industries that will destroy our collective resources for private profit morethanjustparks.substack.com/p/breaking-t...
Finally! Something nominal happened!!!
AAAAHHHHHHH IT WORKED THIS IS WHAT I WANT GOVERNMENT DOING
Much of reactionary politics today is best understood as a Confederate restoration project.
The "abolish USAID from the left" comes from the same place as the people who wanted Ukraine to be conquered in order to weaken NATO. Morality takes a back seat to whatever is necessary to weaken US power, even if it's the soft power of preventing millions of people dying from famine and disease. 1x
I’m sure this dude is fine. He does have a Nazi tattoo. And says women whine about sexual assault in the military. And that black people are stupid. But gosh darn it he says he’s a progressive, and since he’s white and male, who can really say what’s in a person’s heart.
Tonight, on Bari Weiss’ 60 Minutes:
Episode 5 ends with the line “I’m coming to Noosa.”
Heated Rivalry, but it’s cricket and the Ashes
Frontline aired a documentary about the Camp Fire where they spoke to 911 dispatchers and played some of the audio of the calls… it was truly traumatizing stuff… I can only imagine how bad these calls were
TN07 is a story about gerrymandering: the GOP cracked Nashville into 3 districts when it redrew the 2022 map, destroying the Dem seat there.
Fast-forward: a section of Nashville, which just 5 years ago had a Dem representative, is now voting Dem by huge margins but it's been designed to not matter.
If you still think that the left is a bigger problem, go get your head examined or admit you have surrendered any sense of morality and elementary decency:
Moderate, corporate type Democrats are great when the Republican Party is (outwardly) more sane appearing and you have a collapsing home market and an unpopular middle eastern war to campaign against… it feels milquetoast when fighting a rapacious and existential internal threat to democracy.
It’s worth remembering that Schumer helmed the DSCC during the 2006 and 2008 elections, when the Democrats gained massive numbers of seats and took a supermajority with a whole bunch of moderate to conservative candidates… 17 years later, I don’t think he has fully progressed past that playbook.
The TX-18 seat will be filled by a Dem in a run-off (between 2 Dems) on 1/31/26. The special election in TX-7 is 12/2/25. The special in NJ-11 is 4/16/26. If both NJ-11 (likely) and TX-7 (stretch) go Dem, then in April the chamber will be 218-216 until MTG's seat is filled
Conservatives think free speech is when they can say what they want and when you can say what they want. bsky.app/profile/phil...
A direct email exchange from 2011 between Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, just released by House Oversight Committee Democrats.
Fell for it… again and again and again
“Race ideology,” the draft of the proposal says, would encompass any concept that “attempts to shame a particular race or ethnicity” or “promotes activism on issues related to race or ethnicity rather than academic instruction.” The proposal would define “gender ideology” as “a concept of self-assessed gender identity replacing, and disconnected from, the biological category of sex.”
The proposal's definitions of "race ideology" and "gender ideology" are exactly as thoughtful and workable as you'd expect
1/ The US Government has quietly removed a memorial to Black soldiers who died in World War II from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg. The move follows a complaint from the right-wing Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission. ⬇️
Brett? Erratic, weird, and emotional?
Our Brett?!
there are basically not enough republican voters to create enough safe seats to withstand the kind of wave that, for example, turned virginia into a democratic supermajority state for the first time in the modern era of its politics
We are seeing not just a merging of different parts of the armed forces; we are also seeing a deprofessionalization. Competent people are fired. Those willing to break the law are hired. Normal practices are abandoned as the new force becomes more responsive to the demand for quotas & brutalization.
They better not go and shake that man’s hand while he’s kidnapping folks from the community that made them
As an American League Supremacist (unless the Yankees are involved), this is truly the worst possible timeline.
Two years ago, Nick Fuentes was so toxic that, after I reported on a secret meet he had with a top Texas GOP donor, the party was engulfed in scandal and voted to explicitly ban Holocaust deniers/Neo Nazis.
Today, Heritage Foundation effectively said that "no enemies to our right" includes Fuentes.
