6/6 Lebensführung ist bei Haltungen zu Migration, Diversität & Klima ein eigenständiger Erklärungsfaktor. Wie man lebt & welchen Grundorientierungen man folgt, macht einen Unterschied. Zugespitzte Kulturkampf-Erzählungen finden in unseren Befunden aber wenig Rückhalt.

5/6 Bei Diversität zählt der Modernitätsgrad. Hier sind moderne Typen progressiver. Bei Migration & Klima kommt das Ausstattungsniveau hinzu. Beides sind Themen, bei denen es auch um Verteilungsfragen geht (Wohlfahrtschauvinismus, Transformationskosten).

4/6 Und auch dort, wo die Unterschiede größer sind: Sie bewegen sich im Rahmen dessen, was man auch zwischen Klassen oder Bildungsgruppen findet. Die Gegensätze sind also nicht größer, wenn man auf die Lebensführung schaut.

3/6 Es gibt signifikante & substanzielle Unterschiede zwischen den Typen, aber sie sind eher graduell. Bei Umverteilung sind alle Typen ungleichheitskritisch. Bei Diversität und vor allem bei Migration und Klima gibt es größere Unterschiede. Hier sind die innovativ Gehobenen besonders progressiv.

2/6 Die Polarisierungsforschung schaut meist auf Klasse und Bildung. Aber was ist mit Werten, Lebensstilen und Alltagspraktiken? Unsere Studie nutzt Gunnar Ottes Lebensführungstypologie, die 9 Typen entlang von Modernitätsgrad und Ausstattungsniveau unterscheidet.

Bodenständige gegen Weltoffene? In unserer neuen Studie prüfen wir, wie stark die Lebensführung mit politischen Einstellungen zusammenhängt. Befund: systematische Zusammenhänge, aber wenig Hinweise auf tiefe Spaltung. Unterschiede vor allem bei Klima und Migration.🧵

Based on a representative survey of academics at German universities, Christiane Thompson and I find little support for "canceling" controversial views on campus. Instead, universities are widely expected to facilitate debate on controversial issues. Our two main findings:
