Happy Birthday to our late son, Jack, who would have been 32 years old today.
In the latest issue of The New Yorker. 😊

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! ☘️ May the craic be with you! A few years ago in Portmagee, Ireland. The picture behind me in the pub is of the nearby island of Skellig Michael, which was featured in the film Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Today is the 33rd anniversary of “The Great Blizzard of ‘93”—which at the time was billed as the “Storm of the Century.” It shut down our entire area for days. Here’s a picture I took of our daughter Railey standing in a snow trench a few days after the blizzard.
An adult male Peregrine Falcon I saw yesterday.
Happy International Women's Day! In the illustration, a medieval woman flies her falcon at a mallard. (From The Taymouth Hours, an illuminated book of hours, created in England ca. 1325-40.)
People are always telling me I should write about all the great concerts I went to in my teens—most of which I snuck into. Here’s the first, about John Hammond and Little Richard. Enjoy!

Young Arrow nine years ago today, just after she joined our family.
Throwback Thursday: On the Greenland icecap, 1999.
Happy Birthday to author Stephen Bodio, one of my favorite nature writers. Here’s a picture I took of him with his thirsty long-haired dachshund about 25 years ago in New Mexico. Hope you have a great day, Steve.
It was 22 years ago today that Bobby Harrison and I saw an Ivory-billed Woodpecker at Bayou de View in Arkansas.
Are you lookin’ at me? 🦅
A Bald Eagle I saw a couple of days ago while I was driving on a backroad in Upstate New York.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
Cruising with Jeff Beck on the drive home this morning. I go through a major white-out about halfway through this. Glad to be home now. 😊
I finally had a chance to see the film version of Helen Macdonald's bestseller "H is for Hawk" yesterday at a movie theatre in Ithaca. Claire Foy was excellent in the lead role, and I really enjoyed it. Here's a link to a review I wrote about the book several years ago: tinyurl.com/fm8rtnfa
Happy Birthday to Arrow, the wonder dog. She’s now nine years old.
“Oh, the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful,
And since we’ve no place to go,
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow…”
The moon a couple of nights ago, shortly before the rains came.
Should be an interesting Halloween night—40 degrees Fahrenheit with high winds and a 45 percent chance of rain. 🎃 Of course, I remember taking our kids out trick or treating a few times in howling blizzards, where you couldn’t see their costumes because they were wearing parkas.
Thirty-five years ago this month I headed east from sunny California and never looked back—except for on a few frigid days with blizzards and deep snow! 🥶
Happy Birthday to my wife Rachel and our youngest daughter Gwen, both born on this day—several years apart. 😊
