"Raise taxes on wealthy older adults" is terrible politics but good policy. Property tax exemptions for older homeowners stem from good intentions but are actually regressive, because they reduce the availability of homes for younger, less wealthy renters.

I'm so tempted to post this on Nextdoor. I should, shoudn't I?
I really like that Steyer is taking on prop 13. I don't especially like him, I don't hate him, he just seems blah. Becerra gives me lots of Nimby vibes.
"In housing, besides circumventing the disproportionately high elder participation in town meetings where land-use decisions are made, I advocate a progressive tax on older homeowners to incentivize them to downsize rather than retain. The longer you stay, the more you should have to pay."
Not joking in the slightest when I say that the state of California should dissolve the city government of Los Angeles and put it into receivership. LA is just dead-weight dragging the entire state down at this point.
It’s not rich people leaving California. It’s working class folks. And it’s all about the cost of housing due to decades of under-building. Once they leave, they can afford housing & their finances improve.
We must continue the fight to build more homes. It’s essential for California’s future,
@abundanthousingla.bsky.social might want to pull that Durazo endorsement … www.reddit.com/r/LosAngeles...
Spencer Pratt is running the most pure Nextdoor fueled campaign I've ever seen.
I like this argument about the difference between Steyer and Pritzker. It's true. The big difference is that Pritzker is a billionaire who has won and Steyer hasn't done that yet. No argument there.
Let's ride!
Nooo. Who would do that? Was it a Brooks?
Maybe electing a billionaire for governor isn't so bad.
The worst part of any bike ride is cars.
You lost me. How is Pritzker some ethical billionaire but Steyer isn't? I do like Beshear tho.
JB Pritzker seems like a pretty damn good governor that Id like to see run for president. I guess you don’t feel the same?
In LA today:
I took the kids to school by bike
I pick up some Cost Co with the cargo bike
I rode to work.
It's possible. Not as safe as I'd like, but damn it was a gorgeous day to ride.
Spending all that time outside doing light exercise that would've been in a car, sure improves my day!
Couldn't the bus driver move to bus conductor? I think this could be a fantastic improvement on bad behavior on the bus.
One thing I like about this cat account is that it also has some pretty good political takes here and there.

A coworker is running for LA city council, very grass roots, and he just came to me to talk about housing... this is the greatest day of my life. Normally I have to take people hostage to talk about single stair and Measure ULA.
To be fair, the CEO of twitter also said this tax policy is "one of the scariest things I have seen." This cuts across all class of douche bags.
My addition to the Hasan conversation is that I can't stand him because he's ranted against deregulating housing because it will just be luxury condos above a Target... and his actual home (according to a cursory google search) is now getting upzoned by SB79 and the WeHo K-line EIFD.
What do these two things have to do with each other? "45% to 50% of all trips taken in the city of Seattle are 3 miles or less." It should be safe for kids to ride their bikes to school even if there are long distance commuters.
Downtowns should be for living in, not driving to. LA and San Diego have made great....well an overstatement, they have made strides let's say in my lifetime of re-converting from the 1950/60 downtown model of parking lots and offices to housing. We need more of it.
You've heard of the Montana Miracle—meet the 🎆 Idaho Inspiration 🎆
Idaho just legalized five HUGE housing reforms:
✅ Manufactured homes
✅ Lot splitting
✅ Single stair building code reform
✅ ADUs
✅ Homes on lots as small as 1,500 sq ft!!
The Mountain West is showing us how it's done! 🏔️💫
I'm skeptical. They are in the business of making money on rent. If they don't make money on rent. Then they go out of business.
An uncomfortable reality for left-NIMBYs is that a very large share of the deed-restricted affordable housing that California has built over the past decade is a direct consequence of YIMBY legislation.
LA has high homeless because the cost of housing is high and pushes people into homelessness.
I think we are having different conversations. I thought you were saying, as many do, that weather causes...or induces homelessness. I'm in LA and it's common here for people to believe that LA has a lot of homeless because of the weather and not because of our bad housing policy.
Opposing new homes in a housing crisis on the basis of neighborhood character or shadows etc. is like opposing food during a famine because you're annoyed by the sound of people chewing.
