OPINION: More should cost more, even for a parking space Albert Koehl, coordinator of the Coalition to Reduce Auto Size Hazards, argues pickup truck drivers should pay more for curbside parking spots

Yesterday, Toronto Today published an op-ed from @albertkoehl.bsky.social making the case for charging more to park large pickups than for smaller sedans. Something already being done in at least one Montréal borough. #TOpoli #ONpoli #cdnpoli #VisionZero www.torontotoday.ca/local/opinio...

One week to go before our 72km RIDE THE LOOP, Close the Gaps event!

As other cities build loop trails, it's time for Toronto to close the gaps + complete a closed circuit of trails for utilitarian, recreational, and tourism cycling. #biketo

Elizabeth Renzetti: We’re a carsick city and it’s getting worse. I know - my kid was hit while next to a crossing guard Here’s what we need to tackle unsafe driving - target drivers’ belief that they’re the kings of the road

"we’re a carsick city + the sickness seems to be getting worse. I say “seems” because I’m not sure how to quantify the vibe change I’ve witnessed in the past decade, as a person who drives, rides a bike, walks + takes public transit." @lizrenzetti.bsky.social

Elizabeth Renzetti: Doug Ford’s tried everything to keep his secrets. Changing the law is his last refuge The proposed legislation has sparked outrage and a denouncement of the move as “shocking” by the province’s privacy watchdog

"This is not just a terrible decision that will increase mistrust of public officials, it’s a breathtaking act of hypocrisy. Didn’t Ford brag about having 'the most transparent, the most accountable' caucus ever? 'Transparency for thee, but not for me.'" www.thestar.com/opinion/star...

SUV drivers could face extra charges for driving in London TfL are also poised to increase 20mph zones and cut speed limits on the capital’s fastest roads later this year

👀 👀 👀

“The mayor has asked Transport for London to undertake detailed analysis of the safety risks posed by large SUVs and their wider impact on London’s roads. This could then inform any future policy proposals in London or recommendations to government or the sector.”

C.R.A.S.H. - Oversized Danger: Pickups and SUVs — Toronto Community Bikeways Coalition Pickup trucks and large SUVs pose acute danger to cyclists and pedestrians because of their weight, driver blind spots, and height above the road.

We need to reign in oversized kid-killing cars. There are methods every level of government can pursue. Thanks to the @crashcoalition.bsky.social for this incredible report outlying why and how.

Write your reps, get organized, make noise, save lives.

A fundamental tension:

Robotaxi services can make the most money in dense urban neighborhoods—which are precisely the places that need them least.

"Premier Ford fails to mention the colossal public bailout of the Cdn branch plants of GM + Chrysler during the 2009 financial crisis + massive, ongoing gov't subsidies. What Doug Ford gets wrong about the auto industry Ford complains about the Chinese government’s subsidies for its auto-makers. He fails to mention the colossal public bailout of the Canadian branch plants of GM and Chrysler during the 2009

"The imminent arrival of Chinese EVs to the Cdn market is a jolt of reality for DougFord. He’s spent much of his premiership meddling in municipal affairs, notably speed cameras, bike lanes + TO’s mayoral race. Now he faces issues that should actually concern him..."

Dramatic policy U-turns put Canada far behind in the global EV race Canada’s rapidly accelerating EV adoption crashed and burned in 2025 while the world raced ahead. From Norway to Vietnam to Ethiopia, a diverse and growing mix of nations is leaving us in their dust.

"One obvious solution is Norway’s sliding pollution fee levied on all new car sales. The more CO2 +other pollutants a car will spew over its lifespan, the higher the upfront fee"

Sliding fees should also apply to greater danger, as from pickups #roadsafety

Start with regulating the companies that run the delivery app

"Addressing the underlying problem requires both new provincial regs over e-bikes and a grant of authority to cities to license — and to make accountable to the public — the app-based food delivery companies." - @albertkoehl.bsky.social

Two key Toronto climate policies appeared set to be shelved. Then, the public spoke up City council’s turnaround on a maximum temperature bylaw and standards for building emissions acknowledges that Toronto residents experience the climate crisis most acutely in their homes.

The power of community activism!

"staff reports suggested delaying the bylaw by years, and shelved the emissions standards indefinitely. But councillors + the mayor rejected those recommendations amid an outpouring of public support."

In US "no requirement for pickups to pass any kind of pedestrian safety test." So why, we ask you @stevenmackinnon.bsky.social are we copying US model + putting Cdn lives at risk -- instead of requiring auto-makers to act, including re-design of deadly front-end.

While pickups get larger, their trailers appear to be following same trend. In absence of bike lanes, there's even less room to safely pass cyclists. #oversizeddanger #biketo #roadsafety

Agreed. Since pickups are more dangerous, drivers should be required to have more safety training and expertise. This is among our recommendations to provinces.

Pickups are seven times more likely than a car to kill a child on foot that is struck! What else do we need to know? Federal, provincial + local govts all have a role to play in addressing the oversized dangers from pickups. windsorlawcities.ca/wp-content/u...

Let’s talk about the size of trucks & SUVs in the city. My column on the virtue & status signalling of vehicle bloat.
